Im in CT and as long as they see all the emissions equipment you will be ok. Some won't even do a visual check, they'll just test it along with the gas cap and if you pass your ok. I went 2 weeks ago and passed with flying colors. My car is by no means stock or stock appearing.

 

In NH where im from, if its 95 or older then it doesn't matter they just check stuff like the brakes, ball joints, tires, and lights... I know some states they check it with a exhaust sniffer. If that's the case where you live then you can put 2 cats in and then take one out after. Also ive herd of people using a adjustable fuel pressure regulator and lowering the fuel pressure so its a little lean just to get it inspected and then putting it back where it goes. Not sure i like that idea a whole lot but it it works then it works. But if you did that then id baby it there just to be safe. And im not sure about this but i think so states just check the evap system, to make sure that there isn't any leaks in the system. The easies way to check that is when your kinda low on fuel when you open your gas cap you should hear a shhh noise like air rushing out. is you hear that then your evap most likely is good. The rule for Cali is that whatever engine you transplant must be the same manufacture and must be the same year or newer. If Honda makes a v8 anytime soon, you could drop that in. The only stipulation is you must still meet the smog limits for your class of vehicle. So if your ulev your fucked. But most all hondas are lev so you should be cool. You could always pay for it under the table too. 100 bucks gets your car smogged without leavin the garrage. That said fuck ca.

Let me guess, you just got done seeing some tight swaps today. Some so awesome you couldn't contain yourself to use punctuation. Now you're gonna ask us how to swap in a badass B series. Why not read for 2 months buy parts for 8 and tune for 2, while still reading throughout the year. Then go back with a little boosted D and blow some doors off. Screw all that paperwork, and a legit itR motor is gonna put you back a bit. If your state allows boost then do it.

 

wow, it seems times are getting harder in the usa regarding emissions etc.

in germany i can put anything i like in my car - it only has to pass
an emission test (every car or motorbike has to all 2 years no matter how old it is), and the car has to be prepped if you go for more engine power (mostly brakes, stiffness of the body etc).

The only exception is that you can not legally put a motor in that would drop you into a lower emission class (for example from a car with o2 sensor and cat to carbureted without o2 )

it seems like its a pain in the ass for doing a swap i rather stay single d and later go with twin if i want a big power but i doubt it a single. a single is more usefully and better in my eye what ever happens to the motor you can fix haha but twin seems like a pain if i go twin it would have to be a k swap nothing less then that. i guess single is alll the way for me better that way safer as well

 

Sorry didn't realize I had to spell everything out. Dnt be so quick to produce insults. It really only makes you look like an ass. Most smog shops arnt gonna blink an eye to see a properly swapped B series. And if you read my whole post you would see I mentioned staying within the same emissions class. I was only using the v8 example as an ilistration. As far as engine size goes I haven't seen any such regulation on that at all. It would supprise me very much if the bourocrats that write out emissions legeslation even know what a cubic inch or a litre of displacement even are. Lol!!!

a f250 can either be diesel or gas (can swap between them) but they (gas and diesel) are in two separate emissions classes.

As far as engine size goes I haven't seen any such regulation on that at all.

CARB and BAR are joined at the hip. last i checked a few of the members on the BAR were ASE certified/mechanical engineers. its been a few years since i looked up that info, as it really has no bearing any longer. in 2001, quarter of them were ASE certified/mechanical engineers (iirc, it was 12 members on the main board total). as far as the members on CARB being ASE certified or mechanical engineers, got me. but again, the two are joined at the hip, so i doubt things like automotive basics are not common place knowledge among the two groups.

yes, a dealership can install a b20 in an integra. key word is highlighted and its been that way for more then a few years now. if non-OEM sponsored repair shops are doing it and passing it off, that i am not sure of.

 

In cali there is a vehicle class stipulation as well just FYI, can't BAR a B20 in a civic because the B20 comes from an "SUV" a GSR is fine though, some JDM swaps, as long as you use the smog equipment from their USDM counterparts, DOHC ZC can't be Bar'd for sure, not sure about SOHC ZC.

For the price of a type R swap, you could go quite a bit quicker with a turbo D, and if it came down to it either use something like a CARB legal Greddy kit, or just pull the turbo off for inspections...

the B20 also came in Accords and Preludes in the late 80's and early 90's, so not a 'light truck/suv' class engine in all cases.

 

What is the same manufacturer.

Is Honda and Acura the same.

Is Mazda and Ford the same.

Is GM and Isuzu and Volvo and Saab the same.

Even Nissan supplied engines to GM in Australia at one stage.

GM in Aus supplied Opel, Vauxhall, Isuzu, Dawoo, Hyundi (I think) with the same engine at one stage and MB supplied Ssangyong at one stage.

I am sure there are many more. AC Cobra and Sunbeam Tiger are pre emmissions but the trend is there also at that time.

 

i thought you had to have an engine that was produced in the car for it to pass? like i have a 95 Civic hatch so i thought i could only have any motors that were produced for that model year give or take. so i cant put a B-series engine in since the civic's didnt come with b-series engine at the time. Am i totally wrong about that? i think i need to catch back up on my reading of regulations.

fyi i'm no expert or anything close, i'm just going off what i remember from way back when.
