That is some seriously clean parts. I'm the kind of guy who usually lets things be if it works lol. maybe i should start taking care of my engines appearance too (you would hate to see my engine bay lol)
Well I don't have any disrespect for guys who just build the motor and don't keep things clean. It's just something I like to do. Besides, this is a supposed to be a fun motor and making it look nice is part of the fun. :D

your work is ridiculous. looking forward to watching this build. subscribed.

its going to be a great motor, man.
Thanks. It may end up running like shit but it'll look good.

Hey SQL, my D17 valve cover came today... A nice big evacuation port right in the middle of the cover. It's just begging for COP too... ;-)
Sounds cool. I should do a side-by-side comparison with the covers.

Wow. I wish my build was as nice as yours. Really good shit and fantastic planning. I assume this isn't your first build, especially with the quality parts you have chosen and how awesome your build is. D18 FTMFW.

Time to pull the engine

While the paint is drying on the new bottom end, let's take out the old engine. I won;t be using an engine hoist because I need to separate the head and tranny and put them on the new motor. So I'll do that first then lower the block to the ground and slide it out from underneath. (Thanks, Perl for the tip.)

So to start with we have the Y7 bottom end, Y8 head, and EX tranny (plus a bunch engine dress up crap). The Moroso strut bar has already been removed.

Here's a couple of shots in and around the stock exhaust mani. Salted winter roads have taken their toll over the years.

A couple of shots from below...

The sad part is that I'll putting this rust ball stock header and cat back on. In order to put an aftermarket header on an EK, you have to get a cat and get some custom exhaust work done. It didn't make the budget.

Look Ma, no torque mount! They're not necessary when using the Innovative Mounts. I've already gone through 3 of them before removing it altogether. The Innovative Mounts went in when I did the EX tranny swap last year. I plugged the mounting bolt holes with some new metric bolts caked in anti-sieze.

And the header is off! Not to mention the wires.

I have the dizzy and whale penis off at this point too.

Pulling the head

Gotta drain the nasty fluids before we go any further.

Image

The IM is off and the head studs are exposed. "Say Hello to my little breaker bar". I removed the torque from the studs in the oder specified in the Helms manual. I turned each nut 90 degrees untill they were loose. I rebuilt this head about 2 years ago and ran the engine with Royal Purple 5w-30 since then. It looks pretty clean.

Off with the head!!!

OK, so there it is. Next installment we'll drop the tranny.

Oh yeah, I need to finish up handing out some rep then grab another beer. I think I left off with Koots...

That head was rebuilt 2 years ago and has had 20,000 miles put on it since then. So IDK, it could be the Royal Purple or maybe it's the rebuild. I use 50% NAPA coolant and 50% distilled water. Maybe it's the distilled water. The jackets were fully flushed when the head went on 2 years ago.

Progress has been slow. I had to go to a 2 hour dance recital on a Sat nite that had 35 performances each lasting a couple of minutes. My daughter was in performance #34. After that we had a couple of sets of parents over and henceforth came the Guinness. The next day my other daughter had a hockey game and then softball practice.

i look forward to seeing it installed and driving :) oh did you consider the endyn modded jrsc? i understand its the larger case... would prove to be wicked on your build im sure

The JRSC won't go on till this winter, so I'll drive this thing N/A for a few months. I haven't finished up the research on the S/C yet. I'm aware of what mods Larry does as well as the LHT mods that were available. I contacted LHT last year and they no longer make intercoolers for the d-series blowers. I might have a local fabricator make an M62 version. We'll see.

good shit man :TU:

Ya it kinda gotten started that way somehow...lol
But i've been really lookin around for a pic like this for some time now.
Tells so much of how the combustion behaves with the quench pads of that head.
Neatly squished towards the center!
Look how uncolored (almost) the piston pads are.
It does its job pretty well I'd say!

Interesting.. Im interested in seeing how my z6 high comp build works out, maybie ill find a y8 head and slap it onto my build in a few months to see how it works out.
