Finally, it is time…
This is a new thread that is a continuation of my 1.8 liter D16Y8 (aka D18 ) engine build. Yes, it’s time to add some boost to the beast. For those of you who are thinking “What? A D18? Ain’t no such thang!” Well there is now and you can read about it HERE. I should warn you though, it’s long and involved and there’s even some Math and Science in there so you better have some advil and coffee handy. If not, then just look at the pictures and video and don’t touch anything. See you back in about 4 days - 2 days to read it and 2 days to wake up from the deep coma. Anyways, I thought I’d start a new thread so you guys who were good enough to encourage me and so on don’t have to wade through all that other stuff. And also I figured it best be put in the F/I section of the forum. Actually, it just makes it easier for me.
So now that we have the thread going, you might be wondering what to expect especially those that followed along in the last thread. Well, we’ll have the usual seemingly endless dialogue of my mostly rational, sometimes maddening, and sometimes beer induced reasoning behind what it is I’m trying to do. I know, I know, it just gets in the way of getting to the dyno charts and ripping video. But don’t worry there will still be lots of pictures, some video, a Pedo Bear appearance or two, and maybe an occasional spar or two with speedfoos. Chances are if you’re a d-series.org veteran, a lot of the stuff I’ll be trying to explain might be old hat but please bear with me as I will try to bring along the n00bs and also those “seasoned” guys with 5,000+ posts (4,800 of them in the Party and Bullsh*t section).

If you are a turbo aficionado or raving evangelist, then this thread may not be for you. Still if you want to convert me you may want to think about whether you really want to waste your time because I’m really good at ignoring people – just ask the many Jehovah’s Witnesses who’ve knocked on my door and think I’m never home. Also please save the economic advice like how I coulda gotten “more power” for “less money”, etc, etc. I can assure you I’m spending disposable income for my enjoyment which is left over after paying the mortgage (and buying beer). If you like reading about the process of building something unique as well as confronting and solving problems then you might like this. And finally, please have a little patience. I’m a busy guy with a full time job with a couple of kids and I coach a hockey team. I also like to research things and do things right plus I not only like things to work well but also look good. That means look good according to my tastes. So if you don’t agree with my tastes try to get over it, you don’t need to let me know.
So what are we doing here?
As I wrote in the original D18 thread, I’m building a D series engine setup with lots of low end torque. This is a daily driver so I don’t really care what it puts out at 6000+ rpms. I care about performance in the 0-5000 rpm range so peak numbers don’t mean much to me. Don’t worry I’ll post them when I have them but it will be a long way off. I drive about 40-50mph on winding and hilly country back roads to and from work so it’s mainly that experience that I’m trying to have fun with. This makes sense to me because I will get to feel the benefits of this project every day and not just once and a while at the track. So to recap the build so far, step 1 of this project was to increase the stroke and bore which essentially added a lot of torque right off the line. Now it’s time to add some boost. And it’s got to be boost right off the line which means supercharger.
Now I know the D series Jackson Racing Supercharger (JRSC) has taken a real beating in the raging turbo vs. blower threads. The main problem with the JRSC kit, as often cited by the turbo evangelists, is that it costs too much power to make power plus it can’t flow enough air at the high rpm range. As many of you know, the JRSC kit uses an Eaton M45 roots blower and is hard pressed to break 200HP despite many expensive mods. However, there are a couple of things about my build that will be very different than most supercharger builds on this forum and that is 1 – I’m working with a 1.8l engine, and 2 – I’m not using an M45 based kit. I’ll be installing the M62 based blower "kit" that was offered by Endyn a few years ago. I was lucky to find one in new condition.
So with the basic introduction and overview out of the way, let’s get on with it and start off with a pic of the Endyn kit. So please post up a comment and subscribe if you like. I'll be needing some help along the way so I'm ready with a bag of rep to dispense Stay tuned for more updates…
