Jdm d15b timing always half a tooth out!!

Hey guys, i have a jdm d15b vtec(one vtec solenoid) motor sitting on the engine stand that i am finally putting back together to install into my 98 coupe.

I have been stuck solid for the last two weeks because i cannot figure out why everytime i install the timing belt i am a good half tooth off. I have the exact right honda oem 103 tooth timing belt, oem tensioner and an oem waterpump. All honda.

I have searched and searched till my eyes hurt and every single thread/forum says to set the marks differently. Some say align the 9oclock and 3oclock marks level with the head surface. Some say align them with the pointers on the inner cover thats both marked p08, and also have seen people saying to align the 7oclock with the lower pointer on the inner cover. I have tried all three ways and im ALWAYS off a half a tooth after spinning it 6 times. I dont understand whats wrong.

The only thing i did before putting it together was have the head cleaned, valve seals changed and resurfaced it at my machine shop. I am just completely stuck. Does anyone who has personal experience setting the timing on the jdm d15b vtec motor, please please please chime in. Also why am i always half a tooth off everyway i set it up? I just dont understand!

Please someone give me a hand here. I need to get this thing going. And like i said, i have searched every possible website imaginable and always getting different answers. I need someone who has actually done this. Thank you to anyone who can help me.

I will try to get a pic tonight or tomorrow. But the d15z1 procedure is aligning the cam with the triangles that are marked p08 on the rear cover. I actually have done this, align the crank pulley with the pointer on the oil pump, spin 6 times and im off half a tooth! lol It is NOT an oem oil pump, it is one from Napas Altrom line. Could that be why? Maybe the pointer on the pump is not in the exact right spot that an oem pump would be?

I am actualy going to run down to my shop tonight. I will snap some pics so you can get a better look. I have compared the pumps, but its very hard to tell a difference if there is any at all. The pointers look to be in the same spot.. But anyway, while im trying to get pics, would you have any other explanation at all for this?

Sorry it took a few days to get back here. It has been so damn busy at the shop i barely have a moment to even think about working on my own shit. But i did come up with an answer. The aftermarket oil pump's timing mark that i installed on the d15b is wrong. The mark is a tad bit too far to the left. I know this because i lined it up with the oem pump. I also know because I threw on my lower timing cover and the crank pulley, lined up the white mark with the pointer on the cover, then very carefully removed the cover and the pulley. What i come up with is my oil pumps timing mark to be off. So i cannot use the oil pump while installing the belt. I will have to do it the way i just said.

Now that i have that figured out, I want to get a very confident answer on where to line up my cam marks. Do i do it as a d15z1 lining up the marks with the triangles on the rear cover? Or another way? I just need to be 100% before i go any further so if someone has done this on an obd1 jdm d15b vtec with success, please tell me which marks you used to line up the cam pulley! :) Thanks!!

FarmerD, i did not see your question about tensioning the belt. All i do is tighten the tensioner in its loosest position, then install the belt from the crank, to tensioner, to waterpump then to cam with both crank and cam lined up. It goes on pretty easily. Then i take my 17mm wrench for the crank bolt, and rotate it ever so slightly counter clockwise to get the slack out of the left side, and as im holding the wrench i will loosen the tensioner bolt, let it pull then tighten it back up. Does that sound ok or should i be doing it another way?

Well I was hoping you were using the factory service manual. That's pretty much correct but the manual specifies to rotate 3 teeth CCW then to tighten the tensioner bolt. www.hondatech.info

They say to loosen the tensioner bolt a 1/2 turn from snug, rotate 3 teeth, maintain pressure and then torque the tensioner bolt (or is it a nut? lol I forget).

PS that is crazy about the aftermarket oil pump not being marked at TDC correctly. What brand is it? That is BS because TDC is TDC no matter what engine all the D series cranks are indexed the same. I believe all the crank cog's are indexed the same as well but not 100% sure... I would assume so since Honda varied the cam gears on the engines with different deck heights.

FarmerD, the oil pump is from Napa's "Altrom" line. The pump itself looks like great quality, but the timing arrow is most definately off! Which is total bs because if someone was not to catch that, they could be in some trouble.

But are you 100% about setting the cam timing like a d15z1 with the triangles on the rear cover? Have you done it that way? I have researched the shit out of this and everyone says something different and i just want to be right the first time ya know.

The belt is already off, its been off. I had my machine shop change valve seals, pressure check it and resurface the head. I never checked the marks before i took it apart. I know that im at tdc and i know how to find it, i just do not know which marks to line the cam pulley up at. Is it the triangles on the rear cover? idk. Does anyone know? Im getting very frustrated because i need my car and everywhere i look someone tells me something different :/ i need someone who has actually done it with success.

There should be absolutely no slack in the timing belt on the left side when looking at it straight on. If there is slack you are doing it wrong.

Oh gee, look how easy this was to find searching google for d15b timing marks. D15Z1 = D15B vtec as far as timing is concerned.
