I got a jackson supercharger with y8 mini swap on y7 98 hatch with p28 ecu. I know that vtec suppose to kick in at 4800 rpm on p28, but i couldn't feel a thing. I tried to put on vtec light, the light does turn on, but i still can't feel vtec at all. How does it suppose to feel like? sound like with and without muffler?

You can feel it like NOS engage, big bang and white smoke become from front tires ...

Seriously, you maybe didn't fel it because SC give you a linear power from near idle too near end, and you can't listen the big roar that made when v-tec turn on because SC make a lot of noise, and block N/A intake engine noise... when not, 2 first stage on v-tec cam is for economy, and the only way you can get power is when third one engage... that kick a little bit, nice sound and more :p

good luck

on my stock z6 i couldnt ever hear vtec kick in even runnign it na. But i got a chipped ecu with same vtec engagement and higher redline. (not that i go anyhigher) But i could definatly feel it after i had a meaner fuel curve. d series vtec is weak!

my friend has a 95 ex coupe and we can feel his vtec kick in just like if not more than a b series motor. he got a header form my friend for like $5 and we pu tit on took it for a test drive and bam you could feel vtec. you couldnt feel it that hard you had to sit there and concentrae to feel it but it was there. then he got a chipped ecu and it kicks in just like a b series motor i SWEAR it actually throws your head back a little. it weird i have more stuff done to my car than his and his vtec straight CRACKS.

when i first got my vtec hooked up useing a vafc, i had it set kinda lean and you could feal the car jerk foreward when it kicked in, but i was losing power at top end from not getting enough fuel, so now i have it set more like a stock vtec fuel curve and i cant feel it kick in but i can hear it and it definetly pulls alot harder from 5-7k rpm's.

VTEC = weak cam for emissions and MPG.

If not for those 2 items, there is no need for VTEC.
yup i second that notion. personally i have seen faster d16a6's and 1.5's like bisi.simply cus u can get better cams and stuff. i remember back in the day there was a crx(yellow and purple with a yingyang on the front)it had a real mugen kit and all. dr charles of atomic racing built it and it was a d16z6 block but the cam was so big that it didnt even use the "vtec" it was defienitly one of the first single cams in the 10's. it was turbo also.

If d series vtec is weak, then why does it matter if we have vtec head or not on our d series? How much of a different does a vtec head do for d series?
Hi guys!! I'm a new member...*finally* found a D-series forum!!!

anyway, thought this question was a pretty major one to answer for a lot of ppl:

I have a UKdm EG5 with the D16Z6 motor. This is the exact same engine as used in the Rover 216GSi of the same age (Honda owned Rover until it was sold to BMW in 1996), except of course, the rover has no VTEC.

I have the civic, my sister has the rover. Basic figures are that the VTEC (and of course, extra tuning that it has with it) adds 1200rpm to the redline, and 14bhp to the stated power figures.

..I've not included road speeds or acceleration figures as these have too much to do with shape/weight of the cars (civic has the lower drag coefficient, however the rover, being of older design, weighs more).

I can safely say, though, that the VTEC equipped civic is substantially quicker in every possible medium

Hope this is of use to some people, as I'm sure this forum shall be to me!

If you have a supercharger your unlikely to hear anything because, as stated above, the SOHC VTEC is on the intake side only and therefore your supercharger is blocking any sound it could make.

Even with my winter setup of running the cone air filter straight on the manifold I can barely hear the switch.

That said, the VTEC on SOHCs isn't at all useless. A 19 or 21hp increase over the non-VTEC SOHCs is pretty substantial considering people easily pay 500$ for a 5hp gain. Plus having a dedicated low-end cam enables you to run a much wilder cam while retaining a streetable car.

It feel like
OMG this SOHC VTEC is SOOO over-rated!!!!
You want a kick, get the NON VTEC A6 with an exospeed cam

i've never really felt it on my motor.... simply a change in the tone of the engine and that's that.... but i do notice that it continues to pull cleanly, instead of lugging a bit.
