Speedi Sleeve

hey guys,

so my block is off at the machine shop and in the mean time, i found out why my front main seal has been leaking...there is a pretty big ass groove worn in my z6 crankshaft from that seal. the rear main also has a noticeable groove but didn't seem to be leaking too much.

my question is do they make speedi sleeves/ seal savers for these cranks and has anyone used them? i searched and found a thread where someone just moved the seal out a little bit to ride on a different part of the shaft......does this work??

Thanks for the help, i can take a picture if it helps and i would prefer to keep my crank because i got it mic'd and it checks out whereas a different used crank has no guarantees of sorts.

you can also get some emory cloth (about 320 grit) and do a crosshatch polish pattern if the groove is not too deep. If you can catch your fingernail in it this will not work. But if when you are sanding, the edges of the groove feather in and you "rough" it up a little, it will seal. I've done it at work several times.

yeah, that sanding trick wont work, you can actually grab it with your fingernail and then some..... no wonder i replaced the seal/t-belt a while ago and the damn thing still leaked.

I have the same problem I think. Brand new build with a new seal...drips a couple quarters every time I run the thing.
i really wanted this not to happen because before i tore it down, it leaked out of the front main, dizzy seal, trans casing, both axle seals and i think isb seal so i replaced all of those along with all the rest so i hope for no leaks later on down.

The front of the crankshaft you can speedi sleeve but the rear main you cant because nobody sells it. I speedi sleeve'd the front of my crankshaft where it goes to the oil pump, no leaks and no problems. Very easy install.

Where I got mine Baum Hydraulics Corp :: Products :: BEARINGS, OIL SEALS & WHEEL BEARING KITS :: SPEEDI-SLEEVE® :: 99123

Part number 99123
Thanks a bunch man, i will look into getting that, just what i needed :bigok:
so that seemed to work okay?

good to hear, it's probably going to take a while to ship to me...since you had 2 grooves on the shaft did you just pull the seal out a little bit to ride on a different part? i think i could try that? with both the front and rear main,

cool man, thanks for the help, went to the local baxters/heavy truck dealer and they had a speedi sleeve for both the front and rear so i'm pretty stoked. although had to pay for the expedited freight.... i'll try and post some pics of this nasty ass groove

well i picked them up yesterday, i got both the rear and the front..however i was not able to snap any pictures to post up. the rear was an absolute bitch! it went on crooked and took forever to center up, finally got it on there and then bam, it was too wide. so i filed it down just to find out that the flywheel wouldn't fit on the crankshaft anymore...... :shoot:

so i had to scrounge up a peice of pipe about 1.5" on the ID to pound on the front speedi sleeve which i think will end up working out...don't quite know yet

so i guess in retrospect, the rear was a good idea but too many factors kept it from working, i will just have to move the seal around i suppose and hope :poke:

thanks for the help guys, i'll get those part numbers and snap a pic after work to show for future reference
