d15b vtec head on a d16z6 block.

Last year I purchased a 96 civic hb OBD2. well I am a noob and did not know to much about honda engines so I let time pass while there was so many engine codes coming from the ecu, I was told it was because the vtec solenoid was not connected. A week ago I started cleaning the tb,manifold etc and notice the car ran better. So I told my self what the hell lets look at a few forums and see what it would take to run vtec solenoid lines to the ecu. And this is what slapped me in the face.

Engine: jdm D15b vtec head on a D16z6 vtec block, Head is stamped P08-2 OBD1.
d16z6 dizzy with some crazy wire conversion that is not done right OBD1.
obd2 wire harness I do not know what car it came from.
OBD2 ECU P2E.
Y7 intake manifold the one that looks like a spider up side down.
The valve cover gasket are stripped should be fix tomorrow with Heli coil.
The exhaust manifold has that crazy looking catalytic converter on the top with the 2 o2 sensors and its a bit ruffed up.
Also has a cut off switch, Witch I have no use for.

I have my work cut out, so how do I get the vtec to work and what parts do I need to buy to make it work.
What ecu do I need to run with said wire harness I am not sure this is the solenoid for this engine.

Please help this noob lol.

You need a dizzy and ecu jumper harness. You will jave to move the cyl position sensor wires since obd2 is on the crank and obd1 is in the distributor. You can't run the y7 intake on a vtec head because it will run into the vtec solenoid. And you might have to rewire the iacv if your plug doesn't match up.

Why would I need cyl position sensor if the engine and the dizzy are obd1 and I want to run a y8 manifold not y7, and I do not need to worry about the iacv because I will get a auto y8 and use my tb use the y8 roto and y7 fuel rail and injectors. Pls correct me if I am wrong.

1. Your P2E ecu will look for the cps sensor.
2. Yes, you will need to worry about IACV when you swap a different manifold in it and when you convert to obd1. Obd1 p28 ecu will look for two wires IACV. Currently you are probably using the y7 harness.

Note: You can use the y8 ecu for it- but here is the problem. It will look for the cps and two wire IACV sensor. Y8 will also look for the 240cc injectors compare to 190cc P2E.

If your car runs good, you don't need vtec. Leave your engine the way it is.

Unless, you have $400 to make it all wor the way its suppose to.

I will talk to a friend and get the codes pulled. But I would like to get vtec going. It's what I am used to and would like to get it going. What would I need to get to make it work sir. Your threads right ups are the best I have seen so you know your stuff.

there's 2 way to do this. First you need to get either a OBD2a P2P ecu or a OBD1 P28 ecu.


But before you get either of those 2 ecu's, you need to get a D16y8 intake manifold off a 5spd. You can also use a intake manifold off a D16z6. Just make sure the IACV is in good condition otherwise your car will idle like shit.

So all this can be as smooth as possible, find yourself a good D16y8 throttle body. Again, making sure you find one with a good MAP sensor and TPS sensor.

I would also find a good working D16y7 or D16y8 distributor so your engine harness doesn't look to crazy with that obd1 distributor you have right now. Only problem is the OBD2 distributor won't bolt up to your head because the bolt pattern doesn't match. People bolt them on somehow anyways to make it work.

Fuel injectors. Get fuel injectors off a D16y8. I hate seeing stock obd1 fuel injectors on a OBD2 car with the wiring all hacked up. It's just plain retarded. But then again, to each their own.

A nice cheap ebay header will work just fine for you so you can get rid of that y7 exhaust manifold. But you will NEED to get either a Cat. convertor after the header or a aftermarket test pipe.

Now, after all that is bought, you have to figure out what ecu you want to go with. This will be a easy choice. If you go with the Stock OBD2a p2p ecu, you will get a bunch of codes and your check engine light will come on. Mainly the secondary o2 sensor and the famous knock sensor. Or you can go with a OBD1 p28 ecu but you will have to get a OBD2a to OBD1 ecu jumper harness. A cheap one from ebay will work just fine. And all you have to do is wire vtec and your done. No knock sensor or nothing of those things..


Let me know if you fully understand any of this. I can help you out more. But post pictures.

Ok thank you so much bro its hard to find good help in this part of florida lol.
I hope I meet a few dseries members from florida here in the forum. But again thanks and will post the pics of the car soon. I have a tps and upper 02 senser code lol nothing else. I fixed all leaks so car is running good till I get all the parts I need. Its going to be hard finding a p28 around here I may have to order a virgin online. now you said get a cheap header form ebay. wich one will I order the one with 2 o2 sensors or one. and d15b correct

D16z6 Distributor OBD1 and I think it is wired for OBD2
Y7 Injector
Y7 Exhaust Manifold
P2E ECU

D16y8 Manifold
D16y7/y8 Distributor
D16y8 Fuel Injectors
Cheap Ebay Header with 1 o2 Sensor
P28 ECU
OBD2A to OBD1 ECU jumper

About $350 Bucks some parts from the junkyard.

I see no mention of a cam gear. Do you know if this D15B head, Z6 block combo came with a y8 cam gear for proper mechanical timing? If you are unsure, you might want to throw that on the list. Yes it will run and run just fine but it can and will run much better with the right gear on there.

Question how do I figure out if my dizzy is wired obd2 after all looking at the pic you can see it has been tampered with. and its a obd1 on a obd2 wire harness and no codes show up for the dizzy just o2 sensor and tps. and do I really have to get y8 injectors to lol.
the y7 injectors are running smoth as silk lol.

if I can use this OBD1 to OBD2 10-pin Distributor Jumper Adaptor Harness Honda on this engine i might make one does not look as hard lol. Just seen a harness at the junk yard the other day was about to cut it and bring it home but changed my mind.

so let me get this straight I would need the 2 male plugs from the harness and the female from the dizzy bam. I can get the color diagram online.

ok so I finally figured out my dizzy issue lol. the wire harness is a y7 witch should have a 10 pin dizzy plug and the other 2 wire plug instead it has a 8 pin plug male going into the dizzy.

can some one pls explain why it is set up this way. I need to know because to do a obd1 to obd2 jumper harness it has a 10 pin female plug going into the wire harness and then a 8 pin plug going into the dizzy with the 2 wire plug pls I need help here.

Look guys I just want t know the best way to have vtec connected on the engine. almost all my question has been answered but one. was my dizzy converted to obd2 and if so can I just keep it with all other parts pata told me to get will vtec run. he stated to get a y8 or y7 dizzy witch is obd2 and get rid of mine witch is obd1 but if it is converted can I just stay with it. I may need to redo the wires sense a hack job was done. if the pics are working you can notice the hack job going from the harness to the dizzy. also can I buy or make a obd1 to obd2 dizzy jumper harness and make it work.
