Hi, i bought a car not to long ago and it seems i got tricked. this was my first car and i been working the past 4 summers and cant believe i got screwed by elderly couples. This thing is after a week my car has started to move like it just want to go even when i stop my RPMS keep jumping up and down. I went to the dealer and got it checked they say i need a new transmission, but it is hard to find a d16y5 transmission automatic. i wanted to know if i can put a y8 or y7 transmission? is their a place or manual that lets you know other transmission you can fit on a d16y5 engine.

I have spent money doing the following things
1. Spark plugs & Wires
2. Both of the Valve Ivac and the other one
3.o2 sensors
4. all of the oils
5. changed couple of the belts
none of them worked and the honda dealership told me try the transmission after all that
I live in seattle so if you know anyone that has one let me know i dont have much cash left.

You stated that you changed all of the oils. Does that include the transmission fluid? If so, what fluid did you use in the transmission? I know of many Honda automatics that when filled with a "normal" automatic transmission fluid are very prone to failure.

The D16Y5 will fit any trans the Y7 or Y8 will fit... the D16Y5 is almost the same as a Y8, and can be changed into a Y8 with an ECU and swap of the vavle train in the head...

As for auto trans fluid, I dunno... the only auto i ran was mrs car, and i dont rem what fluid i used in it...

Sloopy is right, there are many options when it comes to replacing the transmission. As for the fluid, Honda ATF is the only fluid that is recommended in any modern Honda auto, although i believe Valvoline Max-Life ATF has compatible additives and Valvoline claims to cover all of Honda's requirements.

And if Richie is right and it is a CVT, the fluid requirements are much more strict and if it is failing i'd definitely recommend swapping for a normal auto or a manual.

damn, where were you when i had to get one for mrs car? I had to shell out $80 and drive 90miles to get one... :)

OP: The D16Y5 is a good engine, I have had on in my car for 4 years, and have over 75,000miles on it, and it still runs fine... and since it is basically a Y8 (the head is the same casting), you can use anything for the Y8 on it...

I went to the dealership and i got the following codes p1300,p0301,p303,p1399,p0170

303 mean cylinder3 misfires
301 mean cylinder1 misfires
others one are for random misfire
i don't know what 170 means

my question is this if i find a transmission from y8 and replace it will it fix this problem? i am really really short on cash right now

This is the transmission i FOUND:

P0170 is a fueling issue, it means that the computer can't compensate enough to make up for a lean or rich condition. Maybe replace the fuel filter as a start. Possibly also look for fouling on the oxygen sensors. Were they extremely white or black when you replaced them? Same with the spark plugs, did they seem sooty (white or black)? It seems that it's also common for that code to present itself when there is a vacuum leak. Check all of the hoses on the intake manifold for cracks or tears also. (PCV, brake booster, fuel pressure regulator, purge solenoid, etc...)

judging from the OP and my experience the trans has no offect on a bouncing idle like that specially in park/neutral now i may be wrong since i dont ever work on auto cars or have any experience with them. someone correct me if im wrong but id say the trans wont fix your problem

The transmission in fact,a cvt,, I have one in a hx I just bought myself, and unfortunitly the mount system for the cvt is intirely different so a normal auto will bolt up but wont even be close for the mount fitting the chassis

Intake manifold gasket. my car is doing it now. spray some carb cleaner around the intake manifoldgasket. if it steadys theres ya problem.

And as I have no hands on experience with Honda CVTs, I can only assume that the engine bay itself is the same for all models. So the mounts for the auto should bolt to the "frame" the same as the CVT mounts do, you would just need the appropriate mounts for whatever trans you choose.
