Building D15B7...Updated

Well first of all, I am not new to this site, just have never posted. I have done countless hours of research on my goals and still can't find all the answers I'm needing. I have a D15B7 block, that I just recently tore down at my shop. I'm about to send it off to the machine shop and getting it bored .02 over and resleeved. I have access to a dingleberry hone at work and will be doing the honing myself. I'm sending my crank off to be shaved and balanced. My setup will be Crower rods for the B7, along with SRP 149186 Pistons for the B7. I have a Z6 head from my old SI Del Sol that I will be putting on the B7 block.

My goal is to make a badass single slammer putting around 400 to the wheels daily driving. I have a 95 cx hatch, gutted interior, weighed it at just over 1930 lbs at a local scrap metal yard. After I get the engine aspect out of the way, I am working on traction, ofcourse :TU:

But my questions are, am I overlooking anything as far as building the B7 goes? I have tried to find a stroker kit for the B7, but couldn't find anything. I'm assuming there is not one, as the only rods and pistons I could find for the B7 are crower and srp. I'm not new to building engines, just new to building Honda engines. Before I bought my hatch, I owned a Del Sol and a few Nissans, 240, and 280s.
Del Sol seats in a hatch ftw

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh wow, I did not know that the r/s ratio was so well on the b7. Is it right at 1.75:1 ?
In that case, I could have a reliable high revving turbo monster. Makes me want to stick with the b7 even more. I wasn't aware that eagle made rods for the b7. And from what I've read, Benson's sleeves are reliable enough to go with no block guard, correct me if I'm wrong. And thanks for the info on the harmonic balancer, I was looking into getting an aftermarket one, but I'll just stick with the stock one.

Im not quite sure what the exact R/S ratio is, but its quite abit better than a d16. Sorry i totally forgot, This isnt a d16 were dealing with, no eagle rods. I guess crower is the only ones that make the d15 rods. I havent heard of benson, but if he says that the sleeves are good, then you wont need a block guard. i would only install one on a stock block ( even then i would go with sleeves before that..) The aftermarket pulley will destroy your bearings, if you want to lighten anything, use a lighter flywheel. A port job would be great, but more importantly is to get a good 3 angle valve grind on those valves (May even consider changing them out to full stainless) A very very important part will be in the springs and retainers, people say that the ti retainers that crower makes are very wear resilient. This is even moreso important since your engine will be seeing 10k+ more often than the usual d16, but it also has less stress on the internals. Oh allmost forgot, use ARP headstuds they will help reduce headlift.

rod length div stroke..

b7 = 1.59
d16 = 1.52
d15b = 1.62

ur goal sounds decent and doable.. just dont overdo it..

my buddies d16 turbo revs to 8500, so done right i guess d16 or d15, should be close..
just the d16 parts are alot easier to get for a much lower price..

word. I'm in the process of getting ASE certified, so I'm always around master technicians at work. They can offer me help with most things, but when it comes to Hondas, I come here ;)

I realized the cost difference and easy to find parts after I picked up my block. But all in all, I'm going to stick with the b7 and show it some love. Can't really find too many people that actually builds these up. Maybe just a handful. So its nice to see something different every now and then.

A buddy of mine, who got me to buy my hatch, had a LS/VTEC Turbo in his, and he sent his block off to http://www.laskeyracing.com/ and when I saw the final product, I was amazed as to how good and reliably assembled it was. Ever since then, I told myself, if I were to build a Honda block, he would be the guy to machine it for me.

Oh and one more question, I was originally going with the SRP 75.5mm pistons, but would you think the 76mm would benefit me more? I have read arguements that going with 76mm instead of the before mentioned, isn't as good for boost. If thats so, could you explain to me.

resleeving? 76mm should be alryt..

but with stock sleeves? i cant comment on that.. havnt tried in boosted appl.

earl laskey of laskeyracing fame.. was an awesome guy who tought me alot of things.. his son mike is running laskeyracing now and theyre still doin as good a job back then til today..

- the thing with the d15b7 is.. sure its cool.. sure its rare etc building it..

but il ask this.. the $ involved for it? and if ur capable? imagine how much more ud make on a d16? hehe

on a slight chance? id hope u look around for a decent cheap d16 block, a6 or z6 sounds good.. if u find a cheap one? then why not ? right hehe

For sure, I'll be resleeving the block. And I have looked around locally for a d16 block, but can't find any, not even at our junkyards. I live in Alabama, so that may have something to do with it :haha:
But I'm already committed now, so I think I'm going to stick with the b7. As I said, money isn't really an issue, not to sound conceived or anything. I enjoy where I work and it pays well, so I'm doing well.

yup i take it that $ wasnt an issue.. back with the crower rod hahaha LOL

but i was just letting u know.. you could prolly make more with a d16, and shoot for the "rarity" goal.. thru whp figures..

plus ul have alot more choices as far as pistons go.. CP pistons, Arias, Wiseco

thanks for your suggestion. As of now, I ordered my SRP and Crower Rods. As soon as the get in, I'll be sending my block off to Benson. I'll keep you guys updated. Hopefully with pics. Looking to push 400-450 easily with my setup. Can't wait to show my coworkers who are all about V8s and big displacement. They always down me when I told them my plans. So that should bring a few shocks to their faces. My feelings have always been, as long as you know what your doing and do it right, there is no limit to what could be done. I'll let you guys know how this turns out and hopefully I meet my goal. :thehump:

Yea, I'm really anxious about the block. Some shit came up and I had to delay a bit on sending off the block, cash is hurting now. We've been slow at work, so that means hardly no money being made. Need more cadillacs and hummers to break down.
