Searching would find that the Z6 cam and Y8 cam have different index points. So with your "retarded" settings your are still guessing as to where original cam TDC is before any adjusting. VTEC opening is a set rpm. If you are not feeling the cam come in until 6000 rpm, it is wrong.
Keep guessing and the pistons and valves will have a kissing time and all will be for naught.
I’m inclined to agree with transzex. While I believe both cams have roughly the same specs, I know the TDC points are different on them. My skunk2 adjustable cam gear will work on either cam, but it has 2 different sets of TDC marks. 1 for the z6, and 1 for the y8.
