bump for answer to same question, a buddy of mine just picked up a 96 HX with the y5, it's surprisingly quick and is rated at 115hp/104tq whereas the y8 is only rated at ~12hp/3tq more. As the car sits right now I think he could easily take me in my 1994 EX with minor mods. I'm almost thinking with better gearing (ie-EX) and some minor work it could easily be quicker than a stock EX. Obviously the aftermarket support is not as plentiful as it is for the y8, but he's not looking to do anything crazy quite yet anyways

I think I just really like the whole roller rocker thing, wish they had put them on all the 'good' heads

Most people just swap for a y8 or z6 head.....

For a better flow
By better flow do you mean the ports on the head? Say if you have your Y5 cam reground to Y8 specs, would that be a better setup then the Y8 since theres less rolling resistance with the roller rockers? Plus the money you save from not having to buy a IM gasket and headgasket could go to getting the Y5 cam reground. Just an idea.

All these threads contain info for you to read up on. Long story short, y5 head shares the same casting as the y8 head. Difference is in the rocker assem. and the cam.

Also, don't go with Crower for the regrind. WEB looks like the best bet. Read the first link to find out why.

My d15b bottom end has a y5 head on top. It's turbocharged and obd-1 in my crx. The y5 is a very capable head, only the cam presents a road-block, which can be taken care of by a company that actually reads the whole email that you send (not Crower).

If you mod that 16 lobe vtec-e cam, you gotta make sure you make engine management mods as well. Ask AMkrew about it..

Listen to this guy. Unlike a lot of theorists, he's actually gone and tested the y5 potential.

Yeah, I had all those links saved before they were posted. I'm accumulating more research before I get the cam and everything. Right now I'm awaiting warmer weather to install my port and polished manifold and port matched throttle body on the hx. Figure I'll open up everything else before I get in the head.

i also like the idea. i have seen a few people build them for turbo applications, but i havent seen anyone do an n/a setup. someone needs to tackle that project.
