Sounds like you got a way with it. If you haven't changed the oil yet, do it & cut open the filter & check for engine bits and/or drain the oil threw a strainer. You can pick some up some good ones at an auto paint dealer.

replace the shifter, bad orings (stock I assume)
adjust the valves....and keep driving.
Without jumping time it's almost impossible to tag the valves on a overrev like that. My current motor has seen 9500+ on missed 2-3 shifts, maybe why is still runs so good. Those missed shifts occured in 1998....or was it 1997?
o rings? I have the ES inserts in the linkage and the bushing that surrounds the ball on the shifter (pivot point) is new OEM. The first misshift it didn't want to go into fourth, then dropped into second. The next time it happened it shifted as smoothly into second as it should have gone into fourth...didn't even hesitate.
