Turbo on a Budget

836 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  99EJ6T
Hey winners, I've been lurking on this site for a while evaluating whether I should do a B Series swap or turbo my D16Y7. I think I've finally decided since there is only 76k miles on the motor and since my budget is looking tight and just for the heck I've never owned a turboed car, I decided with going turbo. Can guys help me peice my setup and what kind of WHP should I be shooting for with a completely healthy stock motor? How much cash should I allocate for the setup?

Thanks,
Jonathon

stock motor should handle 200+whp no problem :TU:

check the stickies in this section for a TON of info :TU:

welcome to the site fellow WA member!
check the compression, if the #'s are pretty even your rdy to turbo
hey guys, how much should i allocate for the setup? i have a is a FPR enough for the stock engine? or should i convert to OBDI? (I'm new to the Uberdata stuff). Is there a reference to a very basic setup? -- so we can branch out for there on?

Goal: 160-180WHP

Thanks for all your help.

decide how "cheap" you really want to do it. you could go with a HF manifold w/adaptor hanging a 14b, no ic, and a 1st gen dsm bov. personally i would just try and find a used greddy kit, they could be had for as little as $700.

depends, if you are going to use mostly second hand stuff six or seven hundred should cover it. all new stuff, maybe a grand.

no, you will need some kind of real engine managment.

or should i convert to OBDI?
yes convert.

Is there a reference to a very basic setup?
just look at the greddy kit. it is very basic and straight to the point. but a basic "kit" will comprise of the following parts:

turbo manifold (or equivelent adaptor)
turbo (of course)
down pipe
charge pipes
waste gate (internal or external)
blow off valve
injectors
fuel management
misc. couplers and t-clamps
(optional) intercooler
(optional) upgraded fuel pump

btw: this is all covered in the thread i noted above. also, welcome to the site.

one final question before i let this thread die. my friend have a p28 ecu (has vtec) since my car is a d16y7 (non-vtec) can i use uberdata to upload a d16y7 map into the p28 and go tuning from there? or will i have to look for a different ecu? which one is ideal for the y7?

Thanks,
Jonathon
yes.... all you have to do is disable vtec. i have a boosted y7 and run a P28. Works like a champ!
go to www.rywire.com and you can get ea conversion harness for your OBD-1 ECU
