I'm building a 96 ex trans and need a little bit of help from you guys. I'm ordering a full rebuild kit with carbon synchros, and a LSD. I need help with a few options I have to accomplish getting the best built transmission for what I'm doing. The car will be street driven but a weekend warrior as well. I will be using it at the drag strip and also autocross. I have 2 extra transmissions laying around 1 is a 97dx and the other is a 96cx. I want to know if I should use any gears out of those and which LSD diff would be best. I would really like a close ratio on 1-4 but a really low 5th.

IMHO

Full rebuild kit not needed
Synchrotech for the Carbon's and LSD, as well as 3-4 slider
Honda for the 3-4 shifter fork, maybe from donor trans, why chance it?

All three listed trans use the same 5th gear.

3-4 options, ZC is best IMHO daily performance, MFactory 1.565 3rd (aka 2.5) for autox the move OEM 3rd to 4th with needed machine work, but would have long drop to 5th gear, PAINFUL drop, try doing a 3-5 shift in current Y8 trans.

Autox options will be dictated by class rules.

Aquafina has his own page here, Whoopdee Racing, a forum sponsor, he can help you or do the work if needed.

Ok so I'm confused about a couple things you said because I haven't built a trans before.... 1st I was going to order the full kit because mine has slight bearing noise and I wanted to ensure I have a solid reliable trans. 2nd could you explain why a 3-4 slider and why a 3-4 shift fork out of another used trans. 3rd where you suggesting I find a zc trans and just use that or using the 3-4 out of it? Lastly what machine work would be needed for using 3rd as my 4th? I don't really care about the huge difference between 3-5.......I already shift like that while on the street pretty often. I should probably mention this car is boosted and is right around 375 to the wheels.

Because they are almost all worn out. I go through enough DX trans to get nice sliders and forks when needed. Then I sand the forks sliders hubs and gears to remove burrs.

You'll need to start with a Y8 transmission, or change out 1st and 3rd. There is no reason to not go with the full rebuild kit. You're getting the sliders (which are likely pretty worn) for pennies on the dollar over just getting the synchros, seals, and ISB.

PM me and I will set you up with everything you need, and can take care of the actual build itself.
