I did a d15b vtec swap a while ago and since the swap ive noticed my temp guage never rises. The car probably hasn't been driven for more than 30 continuous minutes at a time and only been driven about 4 times, but i figured that would be long enough for it to heat up. Ive had a few friends look under the hood, and ones observation was somthing was missing off my thermostat......... I talked to another friend at our local import shop and he said a likely possibility is my thermostat is stuck open allowing coolant to circulate constantly. I was wondering if there is any way to check if my thermostat is staying open all the time, or if my guage is just malfunctioning.. Any suggestions welcome!!!

open up the housing and see what's doin'!

It's nothing to be afraid of.

Of course, you would attempt to open it while the motor is cold, soooo...you will be abe to tell if the piece is open, however, i believe your gauge is not hooked up, because i believe it would move atleast a bit-

Run the car for a while and feel the upper radiator hose. It should be really warm, almost hot. If your thermostat is stuck open, the hose should be warm, but not very. I took my thermostat out early in the summer and my hoses never got warm, the needle never even reached the cold mark on my heat gauge. When i put a thermostat in it, there was a big difference.

The needle moved slightly the first day i drove it, but it never reached normal running temp. just barely reached the cold mark. BTW where at in tri-cities are you 89rex??

If your needle did move, but barely, i would guess that you need a new thermostat. When i put mine in and ran it, the temp gauge went up to almost halfway. Im located in P-town, the blacksheep of the Tri-Cities.

do ya have heat at all? cause if the thermostat is bad ya wont have any heat. and about 10 minutes tops, depending on climate of course, should be plenty of time for it to reach normal operating temp

Nah it barely heats up at all, i drove it for an hour and the needle went up just past the cold mark, but fell down again and hung right below the mark within minutes. I can feel the top radiator hose near the thermostat and its barely warm, and cold by the radiator. Havent had time to pull it off..ill probably just end up replaceing it. Is it also true that my vtec wont kick in unless my temp reaches a certain level?? I heard around 140 degrees. Whats yer rex look like ryan ive probably seen you around town.
