Turbonetics T04E 50 Trim 69 AR T4 Turbo turbocharger Honda Ford 2 3 Eclipse | eBay

I found this turbonetics turbo for a good price but it has a t4 hotside. I like how the entry is in the center line of the turbo and the A/R seems to be a good size but does being a t4 flange throw that all off? Would a T4 with the same A/R as a T3 flange be a lot slower to spool? A/R is A/R regardless of flange size right?

Thing is finding a quality manifold that will work with the t4 flange, But its stil all about the AR size than anything. I believe a .69 AR on a t4 would flow more than a T3 .82 though. So it just depends on your power goals. No reason imo to go t4 on anything other than a drag car.

I know t4 is usually a larger frame turbo but this should have started out with a T3 hotside that is .65 I believe. The main difference between a T3 and T4 flange is the bolt pattern right? The exhaust hole is still the same size? A/R is from the center of the shaft to the middle of the exhaust hole, so a flange shouldnt change the flow, just a bigger flange usually means bigger A/R? I dont want to buy this and find out its super laggy. Hoping to find someone who knows a lot more about turbo specifics than I do.

Turbo specifications explained | Master Power

A/R is a calculation. It is a number between the area shown below and radius to the center of the turbine shaft. It is meant for comparing spool-up and back-pressure characteristics. Larger numbers should mean less backpressure and later spool-up and vice versa. A/R is a good reference to spool-up when comparing housing on the same turbo as long as the area from where to take the radius is perfectly round. Compressor housings is likely to be round inside, however turbine housings is never perfectly round, it vavious a lot between turbine housings. Also be aware that you can never compare A/R between turbo models that have different wheel sizes. A/R is only for comparison in between same wheel sizes. Due to the fact that the area has to be a "round" area for the A/R figures to be valid you should obviously be very much aware of the fact that A/R is the correct linary figure for selecting your turbine housing. If not round then area and radius is no longer linary and A/R looses it purpose. Therefore only use A/R as a guide for compressor housings and not for turbine housings as turbine housings tend to have many other shapes inside than perfectly round. Always use areas cm2 instead as correct guideline for spool-up. Besides Masterpower few other manufactures such as Borg-Warner, Holset etc. also specify area on their turbine hosing for correct guidance. Many other manufactures do not. See section about "Area explained" to learn why this is so important.

Area is the correct number to correct compare both compressor housings and turbine housings. Only area is linary with spool-up when comparing housings on same wheel sizes. Most people tend to use use A/R but Area is the correct figure to use. See beneith examples of where you can go very wrong when selelcting turbine housing based on A/R and not correctly by area instead.


So baiscally its hard to say.

I definitely think it would work. I'm not sure on how optimal it would be. The actual turbo isnt a large frame, it just has the larger t4 exhaust flange which even though its undivided , the spool would be slower in comparison to a t3 although it would flow more iirc. If you plan to turn the car higher rpms i think it could definitely make some power. I hope you also noticed that the exhaust flange is 4 bolt which is not so common anymore. Not a bad price but it is an older turbonetics.

A/R is just a ratio. You could have vastly different sized turbine housings that have the same A/R. Just like you could have vastly different sized squares. They are still have an equal width and length ratio, so theyre still squares, but can be any size.

a 53mm turbine wheel is oversize for anything other than a full out drag car on a d-series.

that turbo is totally wrong for our cars - 48mm compressor is about right (that's a T3 super 60 wheel) but that's a 300whp compressor with a 400whp turbine, bad combo.

I'm not looking for a high rpm turbo. Just trying to find a deal and if I dont by the time Im ready Ill just buy new.

Yea thats sorta what I got from the master power link. You can only compare a/r to another turbo of the exact same size. Like a t25 with a .65 hotside is not the same as a GT42 with a .65 hotside. To compare you need to compare cm^2 and that will give you a much better idea than a/r.

These are things I dont know. I'm basically looking for the standard 50 trim. Hoping to find a nice used one.
