Ok, I just bought my friend's 90 CRX Dx (my 3rd CRX I've owned) and it came with a DOHC ZC on a pallet, a PG7 ECU, and 89 teg axles. All for $700.00

The history of the ZC as far as I know is: The motor needs an oil pan and crank pulley and was pulled from a front end collision CRX from the scrap yard. The front of the wrecked car was heavily damaged, but the motor was virtually untouched. From what my friend told me, he got it from the scrap yard and the front of the car was folded back into the motor and the motor had shifted forward and cracked the valve cover. He said the valves are good, it just cracked the valve cover so he replaced it.

I'm concerned why he never did the swap. I'm having a hard time understanding why the crank pulley is gone if the engine wasn't damaged. I guess someone could have stripped some parts off it before my friend got there to buy the whole (minus a few parts) ZC.

From what I've gathered the d16a6 oil pan is 1/2 quart more shallow, but works if I can't get hold of a ZC pan. Also, any D series pulley will work as long as it's got the right grooves. Is any of that false?

I also need axles. I have pondered taking off the ZC trans and putting on an d16a6 trans for the simplicity of using the stock CRX Si axles. For the ease of the swap, does anyone advise for or against this?

I vaguely remember seeing a parts list of what replacement parts and what motor/car these parts came from for the ZC engine. Like which timing belt to use, which cams fit, what pistons to use, what gasket kit, etc... Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or where to find said info?

I think I really want to tear down and rejuvenate this engine before putting it in the car. New plugs, wires, gaskets, maybe new rings and seals, etc.. I've never taken a motor apart, and I'm really looking forward to some wrench time and learning while rebuilding and swapping this into my CRX. I know i have to wire it up for MPFI as well, that's the part that intimidates me a bit, but from what I've gathered it's not THAT difficult.

I'll get some pics up as soon as I get the motor in my garage. I'm taking delivery of the engine soon. He was in a car accident and is all laid up at the moment, and I cant 'lift the motor into the truck alone. I've got to get some tuff guy friends to help throw the pallet full of motor around. lol.

Yeah, he said the engine looked fine. I was concerned that SOMETHING hit the valve cover hard enough to crack it. I'm hoping to make this a simple swap.

Any other time I've mentioned taking off the ZC trans and putting on the Si trans and axles, people have jumped all on it, and want to "trade" me for the ZC trans right away. So I'm guessing the ZC trans has a pretty good value. I just don't want to trade someone for some parts I need and end up screwed in the long run. I'd rather have the ZC shrink wrapped and sit in my garage a while until I know the value of the things I have.

do your self a favor and KEEP all the extra parts you can, at least long enough to know weather or not you need them...

Exactly, I don't want to give up a $200-300 ZC transmission for $100 in used Si trans and axles. *note - I don't know the prices, I'm just making a point.*

it also needs to have the correct diameter hole to fit the crankshaft - ZCs came with 2 different diameter crank snouts - 88s were smaller

Hmm, ok. I'll have the motor in the garage hopefully by the end of the day and can measure the diameter of the shaft. Is a lightened pulley a good or bad idea?

Thanks a ton.

I had searched and found the DPFI - MPFI in the DIY section.
I appreciate the links.

I'm not sure if i want to tear into the transmissions though. Lots of moving parts make me queezy. lol. If I can bolt in the Si transmission and walk away with little damage, I'll keep the ZC in the garage til I need it.
