Do the SOHC's have a pin to dowel the cam in the correct position like the DOHC's do? If so definately use it (use the back of a 5mm drill bit) (it locks the cam in place) and take out spark plug 1 and drop a long piece of wire in so it sits on the crown of the piston, that way you can watch it aproach exact top dead centre as you turn the motor over with the crank pully by hand. I've found this is by far the most accurate way to do it and leaves almost no margin for error.
It wont be your dizzy, the slots and tabs are offset so it will only go in the correct way, it would have to be real worn before it could go in backwards and if it were in backwards timing would be 180 out and would not fire at all. or ceratinly not run anyway.
Good luck
