I just built myself a knock detector out of a personal sound amplifer, wire and gator clip.

I hooked it up and heard valves and injectors but no knock.

So do I start adding timing till I hear knock then back those areas down a degree or two?

That is what I tend to do when tuning for timing. However it is not always just before knock where you get the greatest power output though. Log everything and use virtual dyno or a chassis dyno to ensure that you have not gone past peak power output vs ignition timing.

Another thing to note also it the type of fuel you are using. If the fuel is great and you only pull a degree or two before det, you may actually det on a bad tank of fuel all the time. Keep that in mind also. Not sure how much fuel differs in the states, but here in AUS can be hit and miss some times.
