I have a 1997 Civic Sedan with a d16y7, and like 106hp. Can i just drop the d15b vtec in? Has anyone done this before on a 1996-2000 civic? Can i use the one with the black VTEC cover or do i have to use the 3 stage VTEC version?

what ever engine you get should have the right coveR !?!??!

3 stage Sohc vtec is 12-16 valve switch at about 3000-3500 rpm like the vtec-e and like the vtec sohc .. vtec on the intake side the comes alive at about 6000 rpm

To use the 97 ECU, you'll have to keep the Y7 throttle body and Y7 injectors. I'm assuming you'd want to convert to OBD1, so in this case you'd need to rewire the harness for a 2-wire IACV. I'm sure they will be other issues...

You could always just fix up the Y7...
