OBD1 is the ecu in your car, and any car, made up to 1996 to control emissions and stuff. OBD2 is 1996 and newer cars.

OBD1 uses one o2 sensor.
OBD2 uses two.

People say OBD1 gives you more power I guess because less restriction on emissions. I'd like to know if thats true myself. And yes, you can convert your ecu from OBD2 > OBD1. Its popular. :honda:

An OBD-I is less restricted by emissions like somone said above, involveing the O2 sensors. Its also easier to chip an OBD-I. Also if you ever do anything aftermarket with the headers on your car it wont throw the check engine light.

so if he wants to convert his 2000 y8 to obd1 he has to get a conversion harness and the ecu from a 95ex right but keep his cars engine wiring harness?? And then he can run what kind of "chips" are you talking about?

Yet thats about it.

The chip I was talking about is the OKI M66207 Processor. OBD2 runs a different one. Open a P28 and P2T and have a look.

Goto to www.pgmfi.org for more info.

P2T is the ECU the DOHC OBD2 ECU

For OBD1 go for a P28 and you can get them basicly anywhere. Breakers or Ebay or Thepartstrader.com

so the p2t wont work on our cars then because they are sohc right?

so with a p28 which is 92-95ex?, what kind of "chips" can I use on it?

are they worth it?

P2N is the OBD2 SOHC ECU for the Y8 I believe

P28 is the Z6 ECU

When you mean chips I take you mean as in Skunk2, Mugan... Etc?

p2p is the sohc obd 2 ecu.....I have the obd 2 to 1 conversion harnes and
a p28 ecu for on my 98 ex. Just make sure you get a "virgin" ecu. Not chipped before.........the one I bought isnt virgin, and it dosent work right.
Who knows what it is chipped for........Turbo? Nitrous? who knows. Now in addition to the cost of the ecu, i have to pay for it to be re chipped.

If you open up your ECU, and look right next to the "Chip", you'll see a component marked "J1". This is a jumper to enable the "chip" section of the circuit board. If you cut this jumper, the ECU will return to stock, and ignore all the "chip" stuff on the board. In the OBD1 ECUs, when you chip them, the stock program stays on the board, and the J1 jumper enables the "chip".

WOW!!! I never knew that........Im gonna go hometoday and open up the ECU. Thanks for the info!!!........will this cause any damage to the ecu, or future chipping capabilities?

It will cause no damage whatsoever. When the time comes to use the chip again, you just need to join the 2 ends of the wire you just cut, and put a dab of solder on it, and the chip will once again be enabled.

Depending on who did the chipping, and what parts they used, your jumper could be just a loop of wire, with or without insulation on it, or it could be a small resistor looking component with 1 black stripe on it. If its the resistor looking device, just cut at 1 end where the wire come out of it.

I opened up the p28 last night.........everything appeared stock. But what do I know?????????????? I cant find anything........Nothing with a J1 or wires or nada..........Could this be a stock box?????.....Hmmnn what stock p28 revs to 7800??? None i know of, which is what lead me to think its not a "virgin" box......Any ideas Jaker?????

Well 7,800 could be 7,200 with a really out of whack tach. If you look at the circuit board, with the end where the connectors go in closest to you, on the left side of the board, at the end furthest from you, there is a block of plastic standing up on its edge. Its about 1" high and about 1 1/2" long. That is the PA sensor. If your ECU is chipped, the 1st component closer to you is a flat chip with 28 pins on it. If your ECU is not chipped, you'll see a white line outline of the 28 pin chip, and it will say in white characters "27C256".

If there's a chip there, just to the left of it is where J1 is supposed to be. I'll try and find a pic for you.
