Hello all. New member, new to Honda's. I come from a background of driving American Muscle cars, 4x4's and Toyota 4x4's (Land Cruiser, not some 4runner!!! :fawk: ). I have owned a few turbo VW's (03 GTI and a 99 Passat, both 1.8T. Passat was built pretty nice).

I just bought a 1998 Honda Civic HX for $1000. It has the 1.6 Vtec-E and 5-speed trans. Pretty nice 15" Acura rims and Kumho tires. Right now it is pretty much a POS. The front bumper is all f***ed off, the headlights are crap, it has a $hitty a$$ cherry bomb exhaust and the gauge cluster lights and climate control lights don't work at night. It has a pretty decent looking header and downpipe, but the rest of the exhaust is crap. The interior has seen better days as well. Also, when driving, say I am going 55 MPH on the highway and I want to speed up to 60 MPH the car shakes pretty badly. Not sure why. Also in 5th gear the car is gutless. Last, there is some black "soot" on the rear bumper. Not sure there either. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My plans are to fix all the things that are wrong with it first and foremost. It runs really well other than what I listed. Future plans may include a turbo build, we will see as time progresses. I am not sure what exhaust to go with. as said above I know very little about Honda's. Thanks.

You bought it for a 1000, can't expect a lot from that lol.

The vibration could be axles, look at them. The soot on the bumper tells me you're probably running too rich. The gearing in that model is great for fuel economy, but not for "performance". Sounds like you have a nice project on your hands!

Go find a new dimmer switch and fix those interior lights and get a tune up. Sounds fun, I wonder what it looks like?

I will try to post up some pics later. It looks like crap now but it will be nice once I educate myself a lot more on Honda's and the D-series. Right now I am about to go buy new axles, a dimmer switch, and some other small parts. I will be buying a new body kit for it soon as well. Anyone heard of the company Duraflex for body kits?

OK, This is my opinion..

Fix the little shit that wrong and sell it for a profit.

Find a civic that hasnt been molested by some idiot and use that as fresh platform to fix/drive/mod.

These super cheap civics cost alot more to fix then a just spending a few more bucks for a clean ride in stock trim.

Oh yea.. welcome aboard

sounds like a headache but in the end it doesnt seem to bad.

Since its a HX i would make sure it has the right ecu. fix all the small problems and then start working on it to upgrade what you want.

And 5th gear isnt meant to have power and that drops even more with the vtec-e transmission.

Seriously though, unless you're really in the know with what you're looking at... It still will be much cheaper to start with a better car. Unless you don't care about cutting corners that will just bite you in the ass later.

Electrical problems are tricky unless you have patience and experience. The un-named latter is money, which buying a 1k civic shows that you're in for more of a bargain.

You're intial low investment can easily triple even while being careful... But Honda aftermarket parts are usually easier/cheaper to buy then other makes.
