Ok i just swapped in a d16a and when its at low idle 2-4k rpm's it sounds like the car is backfiring or bogging down and i am wondering if the timing is off because i dont know if the motor was timed or not. any suggestions?

Make sure your timing is dead on, follow the procedure in a haynes/chiltons manual if you dont know how to do it. Check your ignition advance with a timing light as well as plugs/wires/dizzy wear items(cap,rotor,etc.).

Try switching the TPS and MAP plugs, sometimes they can get mixed up and the car WILL NOT run right at all. The voltages get mixed up and the ECU doesnt know what to do, if it runs worse than it does now when you do this then you know they were right, if not that could be your problem.

you didnt adjust the timing after you swapped!?

i'd check that first, then check the TPS, MAP, IACV, and FITV.

throttle position sensor
manifold absolute pressure
idle air control valve
fast idle thermal valve.
