Mr. Ping?

Everytime I drive my car and after I shut off the engine, the car pings.
Well it's more like knocking...It's very fast knocking and then it evetually goes slower and slower.

For example.

knockknockknockknockknockknockknock
knock

knock

knock

knock

knock

finished knocking

I am running a D15B VTEC in a 93 Civic, automatic tranny. 87 Octane.

Thanks for your help, nothing beats D-series.org:TU:

is the car overheating?
is the car overheating?
no. the car doesn't have any problems. its been A++ so far! gotta love the D15B VTEC. Since the day of the swap, we worked out kinks in the car and now its been superb. maybe just a lil power loss during 50-60km/h, other than that its been great.

timing could be off though?
got an aftermarket reson? that could be it as well! Where is the pinging coming from? the front middle or rear of the car? Metal contracting again after expanding from all the heat that passes through could be the pinging coming from the middle towards the back,

sorry not not being specific.

the pinging is coming from the engine.

funny thing is that my familys 92 civic (purchased from 1992, d15b7) knocks too after you have driven it. the longer the drive, the longer the knocks take to stop.
no car i have ever had has ever done it......just the pings from the exhaust tubing......

im 100% certain its coming from the engine. i put my ear close to the hood, the sound gets louder.

but i will check the exhausts, resonator.

but its coming from the engine, no doubt.
My parent's Pontiac knocked (built early 80's), but it was more of a "tick." And it started quick, then slowed down until it eventually disappeared. I think my Infiniti G35 did the same when I owned it.

It seemed thermal in nature, like metal contracting after you shut it off, but I was never sure. If someone can shed some light on this, it'd clear up a long lasting mystery for me as well.

You explain it well. It sounds like ticking, thats the word.
many cars tick, my dads rig's have ticked after long rides (06 and 04 chevy avalanche, and 02 durango). If it isnt really loud and isnt ticking while the motor is on, then more than likely it is just nature contracting. Metal expands when it heats up, and when contracting its more than likely to tick.

If there is ticking while the motor is running, then well you got another problem to deal with. But a safe bet is that you are fine.
Thanks guys for your help. I didn't know if this was by nature or if it was something that was wrong. But I suppose its fine.
you have the stock aluminum heat shield on a stock exhaust mani?
Try the other gas like 89-93 fuck that ethanol corn syrup shit, its for hippies.

or for people that want to be able to affordably run 13:1 compression on the street, but thats another topic entirely..
both my hatch and crx tick after drives but it mostly comes from the exaust and you could think it is coming from the engine because its coming from the exaust manifold or downpipe.

no man, running 4-2-1 ractive SS header

will check for that too. Good idea.

will try running different grades of fuel. i heard i should work my way up. Like since Im running 87, I should try silver which is like 89, and then if that doesnt help, try gold 92/94?

that could take a while. :haha:
Well up here in Va beach...

They mix some like corn oil or some shit to the 87 grade gas.

It makes my car ping, ting, tong, tick and all that jaz.

I only tried it for shits and giggles, and thats what my car did, was shit and giggle.

I only run 93.

it could be your valve lash...i just worked swapping heads on my RSX, and didnt adjust the valve lash properly, my car ticked like crazy...after the lash adjustment it went away.

have you ever played with the timing on your dizzy? too much advance will also cause that.
