Is there anyway to tell before pulling the trans which bearing is fubar? By the sound, it's very obviously a bearing. It's a low frequency rumble at low rpm increasing to a screech at about 4k. The sound is only present with clutch out(engaged) in all gears including neutral, whether driving or stopped. The sound disappears entirely with clutch in from idle all the way to redline. The sound starts to soften with the slightest pedal pressure and lessens to gone as pedal is pushed to the floor. The sound only returns once the pedal is FULLY out. I don't really feel vibration in the stick or clutch pedal but feel it plainly with a foot flat on the floor pan. I've tried to localise it with a screwdriver to my ear to no avail. I've drained and strained the mt fluid and theres nothing but clean fluid. The clutch, PP, release bearing, flywheel, pilot bearing, both drive axles, front wheel bearings and hubs were all replaced by me 11k ago. There was no noticeable play in the input shaft when the clutch was replaced. The car shifts great, there's no change in the clutch feel or operation but for the last couple of months it has been occasionally popping out of 2nd gear only.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure at all. I'm hoping to get some insight whether y'all think it's the throw out bearing or the input shaft bearing or possibly(with the symptoms given) a bearing I haven't considered. I guess I worded my question a little vaguely. Release bearing = throw out bearing, ISB = Transmission input shaft bearing.

One of them is pretty easy and relatively quick while the other, well, for a tranny virgin, could be a fairly big challenge and I might consider farming it out. I know WDR is right down the road from me. I can't remember his @ here at the moment...

...well, for a tranny virgin,
What was I thinking!?! Lmao, clearly I gotta work on my communication skills! :ROFLMAO:

That sounds like your ISB. If it were your throw out or clutch release bearing it would make noise with the clutch pushed in. I just replaced one on my spare B000 S40 and it wasn't too bad. My A000 S40 currently in the car is noisy,it'll make a slight squeal when taking off from a stop and rattles/rumbles with the clutch out. Parts were less than $50 for the ISB and seal. Not sure how long you can drive like that, maybe a day or maybe a year. When the bearing finally goes the plastic cage around the balls (not sure if 2001+ uses this design) will get everywhere in your trans and booger up the shaft. Earlier D series trans are notorious for this.
