tools needed

air compressor
air hose
paint gun
inline filter

supply's needed you dont need wet sand paper but i like wet sanding better then dry. and this is what im using plenty of other ways. also you do not have to stripe the car to metal. optional

dry sand paper
40 grit
120 grit
150 grit
220 grit

wet sand paper
150 grit
220 grit
320 grit
800 grit

---------
body filler
glaze filler for little scratches and scrapes
mineral spirits
wax and grease remover
tack cloths
------------
now if you are going to take the car to metal you are going to need a.- apoxy primer or some exterior sealer primer good brand. if you are not taking the car to metal get some dupicolor primer surfacer its like 45$ for a gallon at autozone. that will work fine
-----------
paint and primer

rust-oleum has a automotive type and they have primer color and clear for a good price. unless you want to spend the money on the good stuff witch i do not recommend getting if you are not doing this in a garage or paint booth. my opinion

this is the way i do it like stated above you do not have to take it down to metal.

first get some towels and clean the area with wax and grease remover then get out that 40 grit and take it down to metal. then go back over the metal with 220 grit cross sanding. dry sand paper. best to have a electric sander or even better air sander makes it 100 times faster. just take your time do little by little or do it fast and get it done your choice

now fix all those little low spots. well first try to tap them out with a hammer or something like that but be careful. cut the rust out weld patch in whatever you got to do do it now. cant really tell you how to fix your car you might have a perfect car or super f&*ked up car. just try to get all the imperfections thats all. after the filler dry's sand it with 120grit if you have a lot of excess if not go at it with like 220 or higher primer should have no problem covering 220 grit scratches.

after all the body work everything is all smooth perfect. clean the area that you are priming, with wax and grease remover again. then spay some primer sealer. i like to do 1 thin coat then the 2nd coat a little thinker i let it dry for about 10 minutes in between coats. read the instructions for your specific sealer primer. i do 1 or 2 coats let it dry over night wet sand it the next day shoot 3 or 4 more coats wet sand that then you should have a perfect looking primer hood or whatever you are doing you get the point. the more time you put in prep the better the outcome. the parts down below are not done yet don't judge. lol

No offense but your bros car looks like complete shit. I could have done that with a roller and had a better shine with less dirt. I sure hope this next attempt comes out much better :)

Looks like you got your self a bondo buggy..

You didnt have to take it the whole way down to bare metal either, but it all depends on what buddy filler you are using, rage filler would be the best route, and i hope you are using a good primer like 2k with a good activator/hardner and a decent eproxy for under the prime..mineral spirits is alright for some stuff but id rather get some wax and grease remover..it would be a better idea any way, and i hope you are gonna do some wet sanding after primer to, "dont forget your paint job is only as good as your prep"

And the 4 door doesnt look like it was properly done right, def looks like a single stage, if its not then you sure didnt lay the clear right, and sure dont look like you hit it with a light wet sand and a good buff job

But i give you props for a DIY

I hate to rag on you, but you really shouldnt be the one to do a write up here. I know, you said cheap. But cheap or not, you have no idea what youre doing.

1. You dont just start sanding on a dirty car. Your just working grease and dirt into the paint.

2. As stated above, you should invest in some wax and grease remover, as well as some waterborne cleaner. Mineral spirits is ok, but wont clean everything. Neither will wax and grease.

3. You dont just start sanding bondo with an electric sander. You need to block it by hand. And with something like 80 grit. It needs to cut hard, in order to get a straight panel. Then use glaze to cover imprefections, pin holes, etc, and block that with 180.

4. You list 120 grit as your finest paper? Holy shit, I wouldnt even spray 2k build primer over 120, let alone some thin ass paint. Your car is going to look like shit. Youll see sand scratches all through out it.

5. Explain to people why you use such harsh sandpaper, and take it down to bare metal. People think that bondo cracks because bondo sucks. But body filler can last a VERY long time, if done and prepped properly, just like anything else to do with body and paint.
