Apon cutting a old boot off, degreasing the cv joint, there appears to be 2 flats 180 degres apart to allow one- then the other ball to fall out.....
I am schepticle about making a fixture to hold the cv joint stationary- and press the shaft off. there is some sort of keeper ring c clip or spring clip holding the splined shaft to the inner portion of the cv joint, .. usually preassure in a press= extreme breakage when you force on rockwell 60 hardened steel......is the old holding fixture, and press going to get this thing apart? or is there some other trick i am un aware of? (OTHER than "A BIG HAMMER")............

And in my case the answer is not "just go buy a new axel, they are only $70"
that is not the answer i am looking for! Any help from anyone: other than a sledge hammer warrior, will be appriciated.

Why do you need it apart? Was the old boot ripped? On most axles the outer cv joint is held in by a lock ring like the one thats on the shaft that goes in to the tranns. I know you dont wanna hear it but use a BFH. Thats how I have done many of them. If you need the inner cv joint apart there is a ring in around the outer side in the housing that needs to be removed.

Take the inner apart to replace the boots. If you have to take apart the outer chances are you will damage the inner race or the bearing cage, but don't worry Honda offer brand new outer joints that slip on.

Well that is that then, i will make a bolt together split sleeve to hold the shaft, and a split sleeve to support the inners,,,,,,and a fixture and press that stubborn thing off! after i do that the whole thing will swivel enough to remove the balls (i believe?).......
the only thing that is keeping it from rotating beyond about 45 degres right now- is the shaft inside of it....
And why i want to get it apart was not my question, my question was how do i get it apart.
Thanks for the insight Gus, I will machine a pressing fixture sometime soon and give her a push.

I use a vise to hold the shaft and then a brass drift punch, or brass hammer to knock off the outer, sometimes it can be a pain, they are held in with a circlip the same way they are held into the trans. of course the last time i tried to do it on my buddies 97 cx hatch the damn thing wouldn't budge, ended up throwing a used axle in it. don't know if that helps
