My harmonic balancer started to wobble and make a grinding sound While I was driving. I am able to get the pulley off and noticed that the slit that the key sits in on the crank it self is damaged, the harmonic balancer is all worn down also. I need to know what my options are. Can I buy a new oem harmonic balncer and get away with putting it on, or do I need to actually somehow repair the damage on the crank? I hope these pictures help.

Your keyway is fucked and you most likely need a new crankshaft.

This was a big deal on the 1.6L Mazda motors, what we used to do is JB weld the new key to the crank and put the pulley on. It has proven to work many many times and would save you the headache of rebuilding the bottom end if you don't want to. That's assuming the grooves on the crank are still good

The keyway is certainly damaged.

It can be repaired 2 ways.

1) Weld up the damaged part with hard face overlay rod and recut the grove.

2) Cut a wider grove in crank and pulley and fit a wider key.

It may be cheaper to just replace the crank
