I'm thinking of building up an 89 STD for fuel economy.
A D16Z1 seems like a decent choice for an engine, but I'm having trouble finding one with a transmission.
If I build a cable trans, what's the best choice for 5th/FD?
A HF? A DX?
My commute is 70% highway.

close ratio ZC tranny, 48 mpg so far. Will drop in Si 5th, making it basically a DX when in 5th gear.

4.25/.702

or 3.889/.771

DX final in my 1998 4 door killed my around town gas mileage. It was great at cruising on the interstate at 85+, but it was too high geared for anything less than that.

A wide spaced 4th to 5th is good for a daily, but make sure you are not going so high in 1-2 that you are having to work at not lugging it at every light, because that doesnt help economy or fun factor.

I think that kinda rather answers the question. DX it'll be as it's readily available, then maybe a custom stacked so trans later...
