Okay, i know this is for D-series, but I have a B and a D and I can't get this question answered for me. I want to rebuild my GSR motor with new cams and pistons. Assuming it would need the same kinds of parts that a D series would need, is my list complete? I'll just qoute from another thread I started elsewhere...

quote:

Okay, so here's my list of junk...
Cams, Pistons, P-Rings, TB gasket, T-Belt, W-Pump, Belt tensioner, (Gaskets...) intake manifold, exhaust manifold, cylinder head gasket, valve cover gasket, cam seals, valve seals, valve cover seals and grommets, injector seat o-rings, Oil pan gasket, Oil pickup unit gasket, Waterpump gasket, Main crank seal, various bottom-end o-rings (end gaskets), AEM pulleys, AEM cam gears, OEM spark plugs, Cap and Rotor, & Plug Wires...

Let me know what you guys think. What about an oil pump? Do they die easily? I need input before I go and spend this much $$$ please. I'm pretty ignorant, but haven't ever taken any of my vehicles to a shop and like to do my own work. I learn something new everytime!

The gasket list was compiled from www.inlinefour.com

PS, incase anyone cares, I'm using CTR pistons, CTR intake cam and ITR exhaust cam. It's gonna be all OEM except for the bolt-ons.

hmm your list looks about compelete ... im guessing its good ... ive never done a rebuild myself, but i know what you need to do one, and that looks right ... so go for it ... what bolt ons? are you planning on getting? intake/exhaust/headers/turbo? maybe? or are you going n/a ... you have high compression with those ctr pistons i bet ... if your gonna go turbo. might have to lower the cp a bit ...

I'm going to stay N/A. The CTR pistons will yield 11.1 comp I'm told. Bolt-on's will be things like header, exhaust, pulley's, cam gears and I'm thinking about getting a Hondata tune. I was thinking about getting a Spoon head gasket to increase comp but it's $150, and I don't want to do that unless I can find a really good price on other stuff (enough to make up the difference). I do like the idea of an all Honda motor though. BTW the car already has CAI, short shifter, strut bar installed and has coil-overs/struts on the way. What about an oil pump? Should I replace with while I'm in there? Which one should I use?

I reused my oil pump at my rebuild with no problems. Doesn't appear that there is much to wear out. It seems that most engine builders (racing) use a new oil pump. They cost about $100. An oil pressure guage would be in order regardless.

i dunno if i missed it or not. might have...but would also need, rod bearings, main bearings and thrust washers.

if i read to fast and didnt see you wrote that sorra! Its just late :) but those are preetty important

What are you going to do to the motor that is going to require more oil volume? Unless you change the bearing clearances, open up the oil control jet, drill holes in the rocker arms and open the oil passage holes in the bearings you aren't going to do anything but shear the oil more.

A typical stock Honda oil pump has three times the capacity it needs in volume for the motor. That means that for every quart that goes through the motor, two more quarts are getting sheared by the bypass valve and go directly back into your oil pan. Whenever the bypass valve shears the oil, it heats it and breaks it down and it costs you HP (albeit small) becuase you are doing nothing but heating the oil.

I bet you really don't need a higher volume pump - I raced for many years with a stock oil pump with the bypass vavle set to 80 PSI and I ran my motors to 9K RPM and never had an oil volume problem.
