Hey guys I have a few friends that have their car slammed with coils. They have their springs tightend all the way up so there is basically no travel in them what so ever. Sounds like you are slammin a hammer when you go over a manhole.. lets not even talk about pot holes!

One of them was an accord, and he did have problems, ruined both drive axles and wheel bearings. Another one has a civic, he insists that it isnt' doing anything , but I beg to differ.
They are ractive Coils and the rest is stock

I was just curious as to some of he problems that can arrise. THe things that I can think of

Bent suspension pieces
Ruined axles
Ruined shocks

And another question, I know the good old test of bouncing your car to test the shocks, but is this still applicable if there is barely any travle to begin with?

If there is no suspension travel, then sounds like they are sitting on their bumpstops, so their shocks are probably already blown. The really is no limit to what steering/suspension components they could damage. The shocks/springs help absorb some of the impact when hit things such as potholes, railroad tracks, etc. Without any suspension travel, all of that force gets transferred into other parts of the suspension.

Also, if it sounds like a hammer is slamming, that isn't good. I think that I would be afraid to ride in that car...

Add to that the possibility of ripping off the oil pan if you go over something like a raised manhole cover or anything similar. I doubt your friends would like their stolen B-series motors to be ruined. J/K on that last part:lol:

How about the fact that the whole point of lowering a car (originally) was to improve handling by lowering the CG.

Even on a racecar optimized for track use only, you need at least 3-4 inches of suspension travel to accommodate body roll and to keep the tires in contact with the road.

Without extremely stiff springs and stiff shocks with shortened bodies to maintain travel, an excessively lowered car will run into the bump stops on a regular basis. When this happens, the spring rate becomes infinite; when it happens on the front, the typical result is hideous understeer. On the rear, it will likely cause a snap spin.

Another problem with excessive lowering is that you've effectively eliminating the progressive camber increase with suspension loads that Honda very carefully designed into the double-wishbone suspension.

If your lower control arms are horizontal (or beyond horizontal, ie the outer pivot point is higher than the inside pivot point) your car is probably too low for optimal handling.

Now, if you're just a dumb ricer who thinks lower is better, feel free to do whatever the hell you want!

I had coilovers slammed on my civic with stock shocks. I blew out both rears. On my way to the mall once I hit a construction zone, they were repaving, in front of a bridge they made a little incline to cover the lip. I hit that at around 35 and got air. Holy Sh#t! I landed so hard it disconnted wires on my stereo in my trunk. Now I have KYB's and teins. What a wonderful world!
