I've got a 90 Si with a DOHC ZC. I really have no idea what tranny came on it because it was a grinding, clunking hunk of shit and I knew it wouldn't be there long. I ended up grabbing a used cable D series tranny off of a retired Honda Challenge Del Sol with a Z6 and handed everything over to the guy that does most of my wrenching (Honda Technician) for installation.

Fast forward 3 R&R's and he tells me it's ready. I pick it up and he informs me that he had to, I THINK, use the case of the trans that was already in the car, the 5th for the tranny that was already in the car and some other misc stuff. Driving home I got to put the car in 5th and it felt like it engaged but all I got was free-reving. I decide to just get the car home and not try out the short-ratio'd goodness like I was hoping to and by the time I was home I was having to hold it in 4th because any little bump or engine decel would pop it out.

I'm (we're) guessing that it being a DOHC ZC motor and the tranny being off of a Z6 that it's just a matter of finding the right mixture of parts from both trannys for this setup to be happy, any ideas guys?

and to think there was a thread about this YESTERDAY when two tranny masters commented on the FAILURES esp. one detailing how 5th gear stripped the inner splines.

I did, I nothing really stuck out to me aside from the thread talking about mains and inputs, only issue is that I've got no idea what L3 and S20 refer to.

At the time of posting this, it is the next thread down.

If it helps at all, here are the ratios of the L3 that was originally in the Honda Challenge Del Sol and currently in my hatch:

1st 3.250
2nd 1.894
3rd 1.259
4th 0.937
5th 0.878
Along with a FD stamped 4.69

I believe it now has the 5th from my original mystery L3 that came attached to the ZC. Since I made this thread I've acquired another complete L3 and a complete S20, I'd really like to have a functioning tranny in my car by the end of the week.

L3 means its an 88-91 cable civic trans. there are Tons of threads about how to identify them. best way is to tear it apart. inspect. and count teeth.

cable-cable parts are interchangable i am un sure of you "finding the right parts to make it happy". a z6 has a hydro clutch stock.

Alright, then there's one indiscrepensy. The Del Sol that the short ratio'd L3 came out of now has a Z6 in it, maybe it had a different motor when running the L3?

The L3 that came on the ZC is a mystery to me, I know the ratio's of the HC tranny because the seller gave me them before purchasing. Re-read that post, I list those ratios as being from the Del Sol and then I refer to the ZC's L3 as the mystery trans. ;)

I'm bumping this again.

So an L3 case is an 88-91 Civic/CRX cable trans and an S20 is a 92-95 Civic hydro (?) thrans?

My whole issue is that I've got two L3 tranny's that, once the gearset was taken out of one and put into another, 5th gear failed. I get that S20 and L3 internals aren't interchangeable but why wouldn't the short ratio DX/Si/ZC gearset out of one L3 not function properly in the L3 case that was originally in my car?

Assuming all the parts were 88-91, an oil passage could have been clogged, 5th gear was not a gear set but instead mis-matched, debris in the trans, low fluid, incorrect fluid, etc, etc, etc...
