Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Aim: Respraying 1/4 panels on your EG (can be applied for anything)

Tools required:
10mm Socket
Colour of your choice in a pressure pack (costs about $25)
1 can of Acrylic Primer (need more if you want to spray more parts obviously) Costs about $10
2 sheets of 380 grit wet/dry sand paper $1 per sheet
2 sheets of 800 grit wet/dry sand paper $1 per sheet
2 sheets of 1500 grit wet/dry sand paper $1 per sheet
2 sheets of 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper $1 per sheet
Sanding block $2
Cutting paste (costs about $15)
Polishing paste (costs about $15)
Wax (costs about $15)
Microfibre cloth (costs about $10)
Thinners (Costs about $5-$10 for a small bottle)


remove your 1/4 panels from your car (this is done on a EG)

To do this, you will need a 10mm socket and remove the 5 bolts that are holding the 1/4 panel:

The first 3 you can see from the engine bay at the top of the panel, the other 2 is on the side after you open the door.

The first one on the side is right under the mirror once you open the door, and the other is right at the bottom of that in the same line right about the sideskirt, you will need the door open to remove thtese ones.

You might also need to remove the plastic clips from your splash guard inside your wheel arch.

After you have removed these, remove your front indicator to give you some leverage and get things out of the way while removing your 1/4 panel.

Take off your 1/4 panels off and be sure to unclip your side markers once you have space behind the 1/4 panels.

Wipe down your panel with thinners to make sure there is nothing on it, no contaminants or anything that will scratch your panels whilst your sanding it back (any small rocks or dirt or anything like that.

Get your 380 grit wet/dry sandpaper and cut it into 4 perfect squares.

After this, get a bucket and fill it with warm water and a little bit of soap (so its lubricated whilst your sanding).

Grab your sanding block and wrap one of the squares of 380 grit wet/dry paper around it and start sanding until you get a nice matte finish with no shine WHATSOEVER!

Run your hand along your freshly sanded panel and look at it under light to see that there is no blemishes or any grainy spots.

Rub it down with thinners once again and prepare it for primer.

Get your can of primer and shake it for about 30 seconds to 60 seconds and just spray out the first spurt onto a peice of paper to make sure its coming out evenly.

After that start spraying your panel in even overlapping strokes about 30cms away from the panel (It doesn't matter if its not perfectly even as you will be sanding it back anyway).

From 1 can of primer you should be able to get about 2-3 coats on each 1/4 panel which is enough.

Give it about 5 minutes of drying time between coats.

After spraying your coats, give it about 6-12 hours before sanding it back (you can do it earlier if you like, but I find it better for the primer to harden up on all layers before tackling it with sand paper).

When your primered panel is ready for sanding, grab your 800 Grit sand paper once again dipping it in your bucket of warm water with soap and wrap it around your sanding block and start sanding.

Make sure when you are sanding on the corners/edges that you don't use the sanding block as it will eat right through the primer and go easier on these parts.

Keep sanding until you get a smooth even finish with no blemishes or grainy spots.

After getting your desired finish, apply the 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper to get rid of the lines that the 800 grit wouldve left, once again, make sure you don't overdo this as you want primer to be on the panel, not on the paper!


After you have sanded it back, give it a wipe with thinners and clean the surface up getting it ready for some colour.

So you got your panel ready for colour, with the colour, it really matters to make even strokes.

You can start off with holding the can about 30cms with the first coat, and go down to about 20cms with the 2nd and 3rd (making sure you don't get runs!).

You want to leave about 15 mins between coats making sure it's in a environment which is free of dust that doesn't fall onto the panels.

After you have enough coats until your can is preety much finished, let the paint cure for about 24/48 hours before touching it with anything.


After you leave the panel to try for 24/48 hours, get your 2000 grit sand paper and bucket of warm water with soap and starting sanding your panel to get the shine out of it.

You will want a smooth finish with no shine and no blemishes/grainy spots.

Get your cutting paste/compound and get your biceps/triceps/forearm ready for a work out!

Keep cutting it until you get to a desired point as to where its super smooth with no blemishes whatsoever.

Give it about 15 mins to start polishing.

Same as step 14, get your polishing paste and starting working those arms to start getting the shine out of the panel.

Keep doing so until you get the desired effect.

Finally you want to seal everything in with some wax! as step 14 and 15, dab some wax over the panel with the microfibre cloth and get waxing until the desired finish!

Leave your panel off the car for about 24 hours for everything to set into the paint as when your putting it back on, the last thing you want is for soft paint to scratch whilst your trying to put it on.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVEN'T APPLIED A CLEAR COAT AS I PERSONALLY DON'T THINK ITS NECESSARY (and I don't think the ones in the can are good at all as they leave a white residue).

If you would like to clear coat it, please do it with clear coat that you mix yourself with thinners and use a air compressor with a gravity fed gun, otherwise, don't use the cans, they are crap.

erm no you dont want to wax a freshly painted panel, you need to wait atleast 30 days for urethane, or 7 for an acrylic to breathe and finish decomposing the accelerants.

Why do I know this you may ask
Because this is what I did for a living for 8 years.

Also make sure to change your water every time you change a grit of paper, you dont want grit from a 380 in with your 1500, etc.
