I went to change the oil in my 96 civic ex with a d16y8 and was astonished to find the oil filter currently on the engine is much smaller ( in terms of diameter) than the filter I purchased on RockAuto which is a wix 51334xp.
I know the engine I’m working on is a d16y8 bc I can see the markings very clearly. Is this something I should be concerned about? I wasn’t able to get the old filter off to try the new one as my wrench didn’t fit around it, but just looking at the two it is hard to believe they will thread into the same size hole

Sometimes it's got to be done, lol. I pay 4 extra bucks per for the 1" wrench off nut though, or at least that's the number I tell my customers😉

I justpurchased an 84mm filter wrench and that was too big still. I see that the s2000 filter is 80mm so I think that may be what is on it. Are the s2k filters interchangeable with the d16? I had no idea
Regarding this:
I have been trying to find this 'Bigger/better' oil filter to run on my D16Y7.
However, when I look up an oil filter for an S2000 (Local Auto. parts store(s), RockAuto, etc..), I get the same listed part number for a Civic filter (D16).

Anyone know a part number for the Actual, bigger S2000 filter (non-OEM)?
I could always go to the Honda dealer, but we're all too cheap for that.

K&N hp-1004 is the larger diameter one that fits, and its actually the older Honda filter, the newer one is the hp-1010, smaller diameter. Most parts stores only now list the one that crosses to the hp-1010 as Honda gave it a smaller minimum filtration micron spec. With wix or k&n the min filtration spec is the same with either part number as both run a tighter filtration media than any other filter.

STP 2808 is the correct "large" filter

In the Toyota world I believe I recall people in the 4AGE community talking about how you could fit the larger oil filter from the 1UZ onto the 4AGE. There is probably some level of filter interchangeability in the Honda world as well.
