Greetings! I'm new here.... 8)

I have a question, forgive me if its been asked before...

I have a d16y8 sitting in front of me waiting to be dropped into my 92 Si. Far as I have researched and found, it appears to be a direct bolt in, and I will be using my existing D16z6 (OBD1/vtec) wiring harness and ecu. I realize I may have some OBD2 sensors on the y8 left over and not used (crank sensor, etc.) No problem. However, alternator, starter PS pump, all bolt on...what about the Distributer????

I have heard 50/50 split on this....I don't have the y8 distributer (didn't come with it GRR) will my z6 distributer (using my z6 harness) bolt right on and work????

Any help is much appreciated before I tackle this project.

thanks
m

z6 dizzy wont work without modification (notching for advance). CX/VX/DX are all OBD1 and bolt to the Y8 head. This I am pretty sure will work. And I am also pretty sure that the y8 dizzy will work with the P28. You might have rewire.
So if I understand this correctly as I'm new to this.....

Option 1:
"Notching for advance" the z6 dist (I HAVE this one) will bolt on to the y8 head and use the z6 wiring...What is "notching for advance? Is this easy? Can it be done?

Option 2:
Use a y8 dist, which obviously bolts to the y8 head, but will have to adapt the plug to fit a z6 harness. ( I would have to buy this one $150CDN)

Option 3:
Use a 92-95 CX/DX/VX distributer (I'd have to buy this one too) and with NO modifications will bolt onto the y8 head and plug directly in to the the z6 harness.....What are the disadvantages of using a non-vtec distributer? Is there even a difference?

This (option 3) seems like the best option, so longs there are no disadvantages to mounting or power, etc....

Thank you very much for your help.

Here's a few links that explain it better than I can:

I think your best and easiest choice would be to use what you have. Mod it if you have to. Save some money. If you screw up then buy a new one. But if you want to try another way then those sites and I am sure someone can help you. Wish I had more experience with vtec. Non-vtec old school is more my pace.
Good luck and let me know what decide.

none of those really addressed the problem, but thanks anyway. Now I'm back where I started. I have to figure this out before I start working on it in 4 weeks! I have searched all over the web...and no one has a straight answer! :(

thanks though for your assistance.....

As far as I can remember from what I was told, the 92-95 dizzy will not fit correctly on the y8 head. You'd have to cut it to get it to turn the right way for timing.

What I plan on doing is this... gut out my 94 dx distributor and put the internals into a y8 distributor. This way it should fit and the connections will work for my p28.

I haven't done this yet, so I don't know if it'll work, but this is what I was told to do.

I have been told that you can use the internals from your z6 dizzy and put them in your y8 dizzy housing. It will still bolt up, but you can use all your stock management.
I have heard nothing about notching...anyone know anything about this?

That helps alot more...looks like I'm gonna go buy a used distributer from a CX/DX/VX (new cap/rotor)...and voila! Done and done.
