Just need a little in site on this. I have a zc in my car and have an extra a1 that's supposedly built(how true this is I don't know.) I know the head gasket for the a1 is what is called for on the zc, but will the a1 head work on the zc block? Everything looks like it will work and lign up correctly(except for the cam gears.) An also the a1 is a 2nd gen and my zc is a 3rd gen. Any help is greatly appreciated.

what year is the A1? - 86-87 has a different head from the 88-89

the 88-89 head will bolt on, however, the A1 uses (9) 155mm long and (1) 164mm long head bolts where the ZC uses (10) 155mm bolts - the long one on the A1 is right above the water pump - you would need to use the A1 valve cover - the timing belt covers for the A1 are not the same as the ZC - the inner ZC cover won't bolt to the A1 head - you will need to use the ZC camshaft gears and timing belt

To be honest I have no clue what year the a1 is, all I know for sure is that it is a 2nd gen. The only reason I want to change the head is because whoever had the zc before me was not gentle with the head causing really bad wear on the cam caps and a few other places so I've got a lil extra valve chatter.

86-87 A1 used a vacuum advance distributor. 88-89 used electric advance distributor.

If the A1 head you have has the same distributor mount as your zc, then it's an 88-89 head
