Hi I have a question. Just picked up a 93 del sol (d16) and took it too smog and didnt pass. After checking the basic tune up stuff etc... I'm sure the engine timing is off because we cant set the ignition timing right (distributor all the way towards the firewall says its at 16 dgrs.) and the tec said this is a common problem for newbs to screw up while doing the timing belt. (couple teeth off) my real question is/ can I loosin the timing belt tensioner, slip the belt off, set the engine timing, then slip it back on??? ( by taking the plastic front top engine cover off)

The easiest way is to leave the belt tensioned and on, and unbolt the cam gear, slide the gear off, make your adjustments, and then slide the gear back on. rotate the motor over CCW and then recheck your timing marks.
