Yes, LS rods must be modified. 92+ D16 rods are about the best that you will get for stock rods. Notice that the d16a1 rods are "beefier". However they are also reported to be more brittle, so no stronger than later d16 rods.

General concensus is 210-220whp is the limit for stock rods. So if you are planning for considerably > 200whp, then plan on new rods.

I heard that d16a1 rod are bigger, but weak material,

I'm not LS rod fittement fan, someone who really want power, will buy something better like eagle or scat rods...

Hey there are my pics !! I have read somewheres as well that the PG6 rods (d16a1) are more brittle as well, but FJT's buddy is running 16psi or so on them make 250 whp and 260ish wtq. I bought a set and was going to run them but changed my mind and ended up buying scat rods.

pauter and crower both make good aftermarket rods
Titanium Pauter rods aren't so bad too :)

Pauter have build some great engine :)

- Horizontally opposed four cylinder VW air cooled design
Dyno results on one of our own turbocharged methanol (no nitro, no nitrous) version at 35 lbs boost produced over 980 hp and 780 ft/lbs torque at 7400 rpm and 6800 rpm, respectively.

Not so bad too :) They have the world record too of NHRA drag racing 4 cylinders @ 6.71 seconds at 198mph ( VW :p )
