I have a 2000 honda civic ex 1.6l vtec, 162,xxx miles with a misfiring problem.
car runs like shit, except at idle.

throws codes p1399 (random misfire) and misfire codes for cylinders 1, 2 and 4.

Thought for sure it was the dizzy
replaced dizzy, cap, rotor, and plugs.... didn't change a damn thing

My buddy (an acura tech) helped me do a valve adjustment.
didn't change a damn thing.

checked the timing..DEAD ON

did a compression check... compression read low so we concluded head gasket as the motor has had an over heating problem in the past.

tore the head off... head gasket looked fine... took the head to a machine shop and it was straight as can be.

Valves are all tight and hold water.

The cylinder walls were glazed so we figured the piston rings are so worn that they were causing low compression and misfires.

Did a quick hone job and replaced the rod bearings and piston rings, cleaned the carbon off the pistons and slapped everything back together, reset the timing and...
didn't change a damn thing

we changed the map sensor, fuel filter, tps sensor, and even tried another new dizzy.

nothing! car runs fine at idle, timing is straight, when you hit the gas the car runs rich as hell, like the timing is off and the gas is being blown right out of the exhaust before ignition.

I will also add the car doesn't rev past 3000.... not because its in limp mode jus because the timing is so far off.

which leads me to believe ecu or crank position sensor.

anyone have a similar problem??

here's the list from the factory service manual relating to random misfire-

possible cause

-fuel pump insufficient pressure, or flow
THE MOTOR IS GETTING FUEL ALL CYLINDERS ARE RUNNING RICH

-clogged fuel line
NO

-clogged fuel filter
REPLACED

-fuel pressure regulator stuck open
TOOK HOSE OFF... MADE NO DIFFERENCE

-[EGR malfunction] Y5 only
N/A

-distributor malfunction
TRIED TWO NEW DIZZYS

-ignition coil wire open, leakage
WIRES ARE ON AND TIGHT (AND ONLY 14 MONTHS OLD)

-ICM malfunction
REPLACED DIZZY.. TWICE!

-MAP sensor range/performance, poor responce ('96 models)
TRIED A SPARE MAP SENSOR... NO DIFFERENCE

-carbon deposits on valves
CLEANED VALVES/HEAD OF ALL CARBON... NO DIFFERENCE

-low compression
COMPRESSION IS GOOD.

-IAC malfunction
THE CAR IDLES FINE.. CAN I ELIMINATE THIS ONE?

-VTEC system malfunction
THE CAR IS MISFIRING AND SCREWING UP BEFORE VTEC CROSSOVER

-O2 sensor circuit
THE CAR IDLES FINE.. CAN I ELIMINATE THIS ONE?

Are you in Columbia?

This is Ryan's car??

The tdc sensor, cyp sensor, and ckp sensor are all in the dizzy, so if you swapped in a known good dizzy you could rule that out.

Check in the factory service manual for information about checking with a multimeter to see if they are within spec.

This car has really puzzled me since I've checked it out a few times now and the problems have seemed to get progressively worse.

Possible short in the wiring somewhere???

Swap a known good p2p ecu to rule out a funky ecu.

Good luck.

Andrew.

will try a new ecu this weekend.

this car is in az. ive had it for about a year and a half. this seems to be somewhat of a common problem but i have yet to find anyone who has fixed it.

don't obd2a d16y8's have a crank angle sensor by the oil pump?????

Sounds like you might have been'able to grab a new engine after all the things you did to it??
Sounds electrical or ecu related.
