cometic vs oem

6595 Views 33 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  vtec-e94hatch
so, my build is starting saturday and i will soon be down to the nitty gritty on getting parts.. I still needa head gasket, and i am pretty sure that i will have to bore my motor. Im not even sure if you can get an oem head gasket in any size besides, well, std. oem.

But how many of you are runing oem with boost and how many are running cometic. And how much boost are you running on your setup and also, have you copper sprayed whatever hg you are running?

please let me know how your hg in use is holding up to boost.

thanks

Cometic is nice for fine tuning thickness...

if you are not worried about changing compression based on piston/HG/etc. just go OEM. there are 600+ cars running OEM HGs.

FYI 96+ y8 HG is the same HG as the 92-95 z6, except half the price(diff part #, but same gasket) :TU:

im going to be running an OEM z6 HG(didnt know about the y8 deal until after i bought it), its already coppersprayed and the head is torqued down
cometic...

...cus it sounds like *come get it* lol
another reason to buy OEM, z6 is half the cost of Cometic, y8 is about 1/3 cost of a Cometic :TU:
I use Stock

i will probably end up boring my motor, im not sure mow much yet, nut probably the minimum that will be needed.

Will an oem hg still work for that without causing ANY problems.

thanks alot by the way for the helpful hint of the y8 price saver.........+rep for that one

edit: cant rep because i have to spread it around first, but seriously, thanks because im all about saving money. :TU:
Im runnin oem, and my motors built for alota hp. Your paying for the name
I have always used OEM except on the Ls/vtec. Stock offers plus sized bore if I remember.
My OEM gasket came in at 75.5mm So no gasket boring is needed as long as you aren't overboring much.
FYI, on stock sleeves, you should not be boring past 75.5mm... ;-)

it will most likely be just a .5mm bore. Just enough to give the cylinder walls a new finish. the 170000 miles will probably be just too much for a simple hone im assuming. i guess ill find out when i crack the motor open.

but the oem hg already come as 75.5 or i need to ask for it?

thanks

golden eagle lsvtec kits come with OEM honda head gaskets. so thats what i always run when i build one.

i will be running OEM
Cometic, I blew a new OEM in 3 months when i installed my cam, did nothing to the head and just replaced it with a cometic, no problems since. If you compare a flimsy OEM gasket to a cometic you can see and feel the diffrence. Plus the cometic had some kind of crush seal for each cylinder which my oem did not have. I prefer cometic for the extra $30 IMHO

damn, how hard are you on the motor? When we pulled my head to put on the ARP's, my cylinder walls were smooth as glass and mine has 194,000 on it.
i think you should just go oem since you are not worried about compression. save your money. my setup held just fine with oem.

well im not hard on it, but i dont know how the previous owners were towards the car, and it is just an assumption. If i dont have to bore it, then even better, i get to save some money, but i am prepared to do what i have to do.
I'm using the OEM gasket too.

If you're lucky you wont have to bore at all. Just a fresh hone.

I thought I read somewhere on here not to copper spray the hg? Just asking because I'm going to be ordering parts soon for my build.
no spray copper on cometics . . . you are probably thinking of copper gaskets which use that spray or the high temp RTV (typically orange in color).

y8 gaskets are pretty much just cometics. Multi-layed steel, not much different. You really should get the deck and the head surfaced however. You need a perfect surface if you want it to last a while.

some say no, some have great luck. ive coppersprayed the HG on every v8 ive built and never had an issue. i also sprayed my Cometic in my a6(even though Cometic says not to) and it worked just fine. figured i cant go wrong with an OEM coppersprayed.

i like it because it helps if there are any minute imperfections in the deck or head :TU:
