When i turn my car on you cant hear it until it starts getting warm. You also cant hear it while im driving only when the car is at idle.

It just sounds like its squeaking.. It started making this noise a few weeks ago

What can be causing this?

Thanks for your help

or its so worn out the grooves are down to nothing, so you should replace it.

what belt is making the noise?

if you only have an alternator, its most likely going to be that belt.

when it squeels, the belt has glazed over. usually from oil, or water, debris, etc. do you have all your weather guards installed?

to fix it, you can take TRY to run a piece of chalk on the sides of the belt. that might help for a bit.

make sure its tensioned properly.

the only way to truly fix the problem is to replace the belt.

when the belt is off, clean the pulleys it runs off with a wire brush. if u do not do this you could glaze the new belt and it will squeel as well.

its not hard to do at all.

if its the alt belt its a 12mm bolt and a 14mm nut. takes 15 minutes to change.

the only way it would be unsafe to drive was if it was your timing belt and it was recently tensioned way too tight. that would whine, but not squeel.
