hi, i was wondering if the a/c compressor bearing is in motion during regular (a/c off) driving? or does it only turn when the a/c has been turned on?

why i ask is, yesterday i was driving home with the a/c on and all of a sudden the air got hot and i started hearing a 'spun bearing' sound, so i took off the a/c and the noise was still there but the car performs as it always did.

could it be that the a/c compressor bearing failure is giving me false sense that i spun an engine bearing?

if no answers soon im gonna remove the a/c belt and see if the noise disappears..
