Its a combination of things.

The D17 engine is really not bad. It has a shitty intake manifold, but so did many of the old Ds. But it made decent power would probably take to turbocharging and mild NA power mods in the same way. The real problem is that parts are not available, in particular a cheap way to tune it.

The biggest problem is not the engine though, its the chassis. What an apocalyptic pile of shit the 7th gen was. Yes, there had been a trend towards bigger and heavier, but 6th gens were still pretty featherweight in the right trim level. The tipping point happened in the 7th gen when they got too fat for their own good. Combine that with eco-shit-box suspension and butt ugly looks and you have the death of the civic.

The Honda Civic died in 2001.

My 05 is the exception of the ugly part. But the rest is 100% lol. Only tuning is K-pro or AEM stand alone IIRC. Also a lot of the shit likes to break on these cars, auto tranny problems and spark plugs blowing out the heads.
