650 Iron Man build

Finally took the plunge to build a quadcopter (so leave the drone BS out of this thread please. Its a quad not a "drone")

This is a build I started last night and will hopefully be finished by saturday.

Its a Tarot 650 Iron Man frame.

THis is right after installing the arms, and the legs

After mounting the 2 arms for camera mount/gimbel, and added the feet

Loosely installed the motor plates. Orange is going to be the front

Thats what I got done last night. Took about a hour to do it and with the lack of instruction it was overall pretty straight forward.

Tonight I hope to level up my mounting plates, mount my motors, install my ESCs, Flight controller, GPS, OSD, VTX, and camera

There is no really straight answer. I may be able to lift say a DSLR, but my flight time will be reduced. Heck if I was to drop the video TX, OSD(on screen display) I might be able to. My all up weight is goin to be under 2000grams hopefully. The lighter it is the more flight time I get.

If wanting to do heavier lifting a hex or an octo will be better, maybe a 1000mm might do you good but more motors, more lift
I understand now, my DSLR weighs close to 5-6 lbs depending on the lens, I was actually thinking about a mirrorless. They're dirt cheap now and some are super light.

I do want to get either a drone or a helicopter to do aerial crowd shots, I just got a contract with the city to shoot some of their events. Thankfully they're gonna cover the gear cost(up to $3,500) all the permits and insurance in case something goes wrong.

Yea for that kind of lifting an Octocopter is going to be you best bet. You might be able to get away with a Hex but lifting that much weight and a battery to get more than 5 minutes of flight time an octo will probably be the best.

its cool they are going to cover all that. Just dont freak out if a setup cost more than 3500. I have close to 1k into my quad alone, but everything is brand new minus my flight controller.

Are you going to leave the wires bare or loom it? Nylon sleeves would make it super clean!

No. All the wires are exposed as I am going to have to set my motors to CW/CCW rotations, setting channels, etc.

Motor wires and speed controllers are going inside the arms, main power wires are going under the main plate
Nice update, can't wait to see you get some flight time!
Cool updates, coming along nice.

Thanks gents.

Wife and I sat down to start calibrating everything and the USB was acting up. After digging around I can calibrate the flight controller, GPS, and compass all off frame so tonight I get to do that
No updates to report. Its been cloudly and have not been able to get my GPS lock to get things rolling.
Still having issues with my GPS, so everything is on hold till I get another one

It may have already been asked, but where did you buy your kit at? I am looking at buying one for myself for Christmas.

To answer your question, I might be ordering another one. My brother is bringing me his unit on tuesday. If it works, I will be getting another GPS unit.

If it doesnt work I am getting a whole nother flight controller.
Update in post 3.

No GPS lock but the compass and GPS is getting power. I think it's an arming issue so starting to mess with the controls on it and flashed my firmware over to open TX
Alright. Today I hopefully get the thing in the air.

Got to level up my motors, clean up wiring, mount the props, charge all my batteries
Got a couple pics added to post 3.

Finally got everything together and now comes the tuning part. I fiddled with it some but nothing working so far
going on 4 week and I have no videos yet. I am ditching my current flight controller and getting a different one.

So hopefully this weekend I can have some up
Maiden flight as of 12 November

Strapped my gopro to it today.

This is without a 2/3 axis gimbal.

Evening flight today. The other quad is my little brothers

evening flight of my quad
Ordered some blue and green LEDs so I can do some night flying. Everything should be in by Friday, but I go hunting Saturday but going to try and get some stuff done Friday if everything comes in as should
I am thinking of order some 500mm arms and replace the 280mm arms I have. I do have 330mm arms on order to bump the span around 700mm
