I have a 2000 Civic EX coupe and I've been trying to program a new remote for my locks (old one broke the loop for a keychain). Here's what I know so far from my research:
-99-00 Civics have a separate box for keyless entry and it's NOT in the radio like 96-98 Civics
-the keyless entry box IS working because my old remotes (I have 2 old ones with broken keychain loops) still work flawlessly
-the steps are: turn key to ON (II) -> push lock/unlock button -> turn key back to OFF (I)
-steps mentioned above must be performed 3 times and an additional 4th time where you stop after the second step and the locks are supposed to cycle, indicating programming mode
-all steps must be performed within a 5 second window of time (except programming remotes which is 10 seconds)

What my problem is that I'm doing the steps to enter programming mode EXACTLY as everyone says and it never seems to work. They say you can do it with any remote, and it doesn't work with any remote I have. I'll get to the 4 repetition, hit the button, and the door just lock like they normally do when I go to start the car.

Anyone have this issue before? Would pulling my negative battery cable off for a minute help?

I'm lazy, take the old guts out and put them in the new remote case?





EDIT: After the door locks will it unlock with the same remote?

YOU SIR ARE A GENIUS WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT.

And if you mean after I turn the key to ON (II) and the door locks after a few seconds, it still unlocks with the old remote, but never with the new one I'm trying to program.

Your steps seem correct. My remote actually completely stopped working 2 weeks ago so I purchased a new one. The dealer programmed mine for me and he did what I think are the same steps you just listed.

DNA's fix is a no brainer if your issue is only cosmetic.

you guys are silly

the key remotes tend to crack solder connections to battery from being jostled around or someone pressing buttons too hard and flexing case and circuitboard.

99% of time a drop of solder or reflow, and new battery fixes all.

I havent actually seen a honda keyfob fail on its own. Angry wives/girlfriends throwing fob down and smashing to bits are of course exceptions to the rule :bandito:

new cases are cheap, and at least now you have a new fob.


BTW I believe the new fob programming requires a honda OBD2 tool to throw it into learning mode, then you key on, press unlock and lock at same time, and key off on 99-00 civics.

the key remotes tend to crack solder connections to battery from being jostled around or someone pressing buttons too hard and flexing case and circuitboard.

99% of time a drop of solder or reflow, and new battery fixes all.

I checked this exact issue with mine, as I looked it up online before spending a million dollars on a new one. It just felt like working only when it wanted to. I did save it, so I guess I could take a closer look. If it ends up being fixable then I will have a spare since the in-laws lost one of the originals.

Also, when mine was programmed he had no special tools, just my key.

I was guessing, as I had a buddy who owned a 94 accord, and they yanked a OBD2 tool out at the dealership to program his new fob.

If its working only when it wants too, its most likely a cracked solder joint. Like I said, honda fobs dont "go bad"

This aint a GM product lol

Turn key on hit button, 4 times. On the fourth time u should hear the doors cycle, when u hear that dont turn key off yet, keep pressing all the buttons, lock , unlock etc. Than turn key off after a couple seconds than check. When u are turning the key to on and than off, u don't turn all the way to "lock" fyi.
