Hello,
I just recently bought a 1998 civic hx 5 speed manual and as title says it has a CEL on. And searching for the cure. Currently does operate smoothly just no vtec engagement .
Code numbers found were
P1163
P0430
P-1457
Other info to say is running casting codes I did find it has the d16y5 block with the d16y8 head
Running on the civic hx ecu
Ideas or thoughts where to start?

Also wanted to mention that I also searched a bit and found out I think it should have a 5wire primary o2 but has a 4wire o2 instead.
Guessing they started a y8 conversion

Any help appreciated guys

And car is from Hilliard Ohio, so maybe old owner is a member?

P1163 primary o2 slow response maybe wrong sensor

P0430 secondary o2 does it have a cat?

P-1457 evap all hunkydory or even hooked up?

So ...change ecu to allow y8ness

install cat or o2 sim

check evap vent valve function.

Ok yeah I was thinking I would at least need a p2p ecu for sure.

It does have a catalytic converter currently. But may not be functioning or clogged. Prob. Going to delete and use a o2 simulator.

On the primary it could be, I'm not sure what the previous owner did yet. I know I read that the primary o2 usually needs converted for y8 I thought.

life is super simple for you my friend

d16y8 engine harness from any 96-98 manual ex

d16y8 ecu from any 96-98 manual ex

BOOM. you have your problems sorted out as far as performance

EVAP could be as simple as previous owner mucking about under the hood.

Grab a vacuum diagram, trace a few wires, and have fun on the journey of no CEL

lol

Copy that, already got a line on the ecu. Going to put that in and see what happens, if it still has any issues, I will get the harness as well, may do that anyway.

But yeah lol oh the fun I will have doing vacuum line diagnostics.

Ok so I just tried the new p2p ecu which is a 5 speed manual one and car seems to operate good and vtec does engage etc. but has a CEL still which I will get checked hopefully tomorrow.
But now it idles like crap. Sits at 200 rpm and just about wants to die. Any ideas to look into?

Thanks in advance

Copy that I will take a look into it. I will double check coolant but should be good, checked it when I bought the car.

Keep in mind the HX used the same head casting as the EX. The difference was the cam & rocker arms. If you look under the cover and see roller rockers, it's not a full y8 head.

As far as crappy idle, the Y8 uses a 2-wire model while nearly everything else 96+ uses a 3-wire. If it's the HX intake & IACV, the EX ecu won't be able to control it - and idle will be ~400rpm or lower.

You just solved it I would say likely. When I tried it, I had the p2p ecu, the hx manifold and y8 head.so I am thinking the iacv is the idle issue then. How do I need to go about solving that? I recently picked up a spare y8 head for cheap with a manual y8 intake complete as well with the injectors and such.

Problem solved pretty much, decided to go another route and went back to obd1 and used a chipped p28 with jumper.

So I just installed a ryewire obd2a to obd1 jumper and obd1 ecu with a d16y8 tune on it. Now cels are all gone but it's idle is very choppy
Any suggestions now? Maybe the iacv?

To clarify setup:
D16y5 bottom end
D16y8 head
D16y5 intake and exhaust manifolds
Intake and soon adding header

Also to help, I have tried running couple ecus. As well as running p2p ecu without jumper to have very similar behavior
I am reading that I may need to do something with iacv wiring?
