Default Packaging your transmission. DIY

This is how all transmissions shipped from Whoopee Doo Racing are packaged. You may ship them to Whoopee Doo Racing however you like, but if this method is not used, you will be charged for the packaging on the return shipping. Use this guide at your own risk as Whoopee Doo Racing is not responsible for your transmission during shipping.

Supplies needed:

1/2" thick 24"x24" plywood (not OSB)
3 - 96" 2x4's
3 - 1/2" x 3" hex head bolts
3 - 1/2" nuts
3 - 1/2" I.D. fender washers
2 - 3/8" x 4" i-hooks
2 - 3/8" nuts (4 total if the i-hooks don't come with one)
4 - 3/8" I.D. fender washers
2-1/2" wood screws
1-5/8" wood screws
rachet strap
24"x24"x24" box (UPS has them labeled as 25" instead of 24")

Cut the 2x4's into 19" and 24" lengths. You'll need 4 of the 19" length and 6 of the 24" length. If you don't have the tools needed, most stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Builders Square, etc) will cut them for you along with the plywood.

Marks are to show the orientation of the 19" 2x4's on the plywood.

Use two 2-1/2" screws through the bottom of the plywood to attach the 19" 2x4's.

Use 1-5/8" screws to attach two of the 24" 2x4's to the bottom of the plywood on the opposite outside edges. You will add a third 2x4 later.

Pre-drill two of the 24" 2x4's as pictured below (x = pre-drill location). This will keep them from splitting.

Pre-drill one of the 24" 2x4's as pictured below (the 2x4 that runs north/south in the picture, x = pre-drill locations).

Place the transmission on the base and position so the fender washers (bottom side of plywood) will clear the outside and center 2x4's. Mark the location of the center 2x4 so you can attach it later.

Drill through the bolt holes on the transmission. You need three 1/2" holes to bolt the trans onto the base, and two 3/8" holes to attach the i-hooks. Place the 3/8" holes close to where the starter mounts, and the drain plug (picture further down). Mark where the mainshaft is and drill a pilot hole through the plywood large enough so the mainshaft will sit in it (I use a 1" bit). If you trans has the dowel pins attached, remove them or drill pilot holes for them as well. Now attach the third 2x4 to the bottom of the plywood using 1-5/8" screws.

Bolt the transmission to the base, bolts up through the bottom with a fender washer on the bottom and nut on top. Use a nut and fender washer on both the top and bottom of the i-hooks.

Attach the rachet strap to the i-hooks and tighten. It does not need to be super tight, just snug enough so its under tension. Secure the end of it (I like to wrap and tie both hook ends as pictured). Note I have stopped using the rachet strap without any problems. It and the i-hooks do help with lowering the crate into the box though.

Lifting the transmission/crate base by the transmission and rachet strap (not by the 19" 2x4's or crate base) place it in the box. This is a two person step.

Attach the remaining five 24" 2x4's as pictured. Be sure to position them so the 19" 2x4's are fully in the corners of the box. Use 2-1/2" screws.

Seal the box up and attach your shipping label or take it to your UPS store/Customer Service Center. It will weigh about 95 pounds and should be insured for the amount it would cost to repair/replace it plus shipping.

How do you protect the DS axle seal from being pushed in too far?

Thoughts about spacing the tranny off the plywood to protect the shaft and seal?

No need to space, the seal doesn't get pressed in.

Another thought, if the top cross piece was under the two outer 2x4's you could use an engine lift to raise the wooden frame, then slide the box over and lower it down.

Esp. if your alone in the shop.

I wouldn't want to try. The screws holding the 19" 2x4's to the plywood hold up well in shipping, but I wouldn't ask them to hold the weight of the trans and crate in the air. If someone helping isn't an option you can always groove both ends of the plywood so you can use straps to lower it with a engine lift, then simply pull the straps out once its in the box (grooves would allow them to slip out instead of being sandwiched between the plywood and box).

Glad to report that no transmissions have been damaged since I came up with this packing method.

Also the easiest way to pack it up by yourself is to elevate the crate from the bottom, slide the box over the top, and tape it up while lifting the bottom one side at a time.

Chris, your pics are no longer working.

I was gonna suggest your boxing idea to some who is looking to ship a crank with flywheel attached on another forum.
