Default slipping auto d16z6

So I picked up a 94 civic coupe (canadian SI). It came with a 1.5 non vtec ecu. The car slips leaving first gear, second, and third. However, if I'm going hardish on the throttle, it wont slip. It'll just shift thru like normal. Sometimes if I'm cruising along behind a car coming to a stop (no gas but no brake) and I hit the gas too quickly, it'll slip. I've had the car running on the 1.5 ecu with these random slips for about 6k miles. Hasn't gotten any worse or any better. Ideas?

Perhaps I should've included some more information. I bought the p28, and it's coming. However, the current ecu apparently runs the engine in safe mode, it won't drop more than 1 gear when floored (if even 1). Wont go passed 4500 without using the selector. I'm wondering if the previous owner put in the 1.5 ecu to attempt to prolong the life of the tranny? The car is a stock d16z6, I have no clue why this ecu would have been swapped out.

your car uses a second cable reel at the throttlebody to control kickdown.

If this is very loose (super common) it will not actually understand you are giving the car gas and trying to accelerate.

use 2 10mm wrenches. Loosen each nut, and hand thread the cable sleeve until its snug, not tight. tap teh cable, it should have a little resistance.

Now back off the threaded sleeve one full rotation, and tighten down. this should give you a slight amount of slack.

Do the same for the main throttlecable. you will get some performance back

92-95 adjustment is at the TB, 88-91 is down by the trans.

Making that 1-2 shift bark is possible, but not suggested.

Lmao...Ok so yeah it was definitely the cable. I'll leave it at that. Can't wait for the fucking p28 to come in the mail! Should be here soon. Can't wait to feel vtecs. Also, slips and odd throttle behavior fixed.

vtec isn't that special. and Ive ran my car to 6k recently and felt/heard no real difference.

With the new ecu I believe vtec is activating. Butt dyno says yes, but it sounds the exact same as it did with the po6. Also, it won't go passed 5500 rpm during WOT. Further adjustment to the tranny cable or is that normal? It doesn't hit a Rev limiter or anything it just will always shift at 5500.

You will have to manually hold a gear to find the revlimiter.

I'd have to dig up the manual to find the shift points but I wanna say it was 6000 for D15B7, 6500 for D16Z6.

might have been 5500/6000, but either way the car is still slow as balls with slushboxes. I had three....

Depends on the cams and where the vtec crossover happens, ideally the crossover should be as close as possible to completely smooth. You shouldnt feel a vtec kick unless you placed the crossover way to high.

With stock cams and stock ecu tuning, yes you will feel a kick.

however, on stock parts but a real tune, it can be damn near seamless.

For some reason honda set the crossover hgiher than its efficient point. Possibly to enable customers to actually feel it.

Toyota was even worse at it with their VVTi settings....

That motor would have kicked GSR ass if tuned properly.

They could drop it down 1500 rpms and would have had a nice strong midrange pull

This also explains how the tuned Scions make such a huge difference versus a fully stock setup. I never realized this.
