Default Torco MTF GL4 vs Torco MTF GL5

Torco updated the MTF from GL4 to GL5. Anybody noticed any difference? Is the GL5 version better specially for older transmissions? I noticed that the GL5 version it is a little bit lighter in viscosity and smells more of a motor oil than a transmission oil. Appreciate any input on the subject...

No practical difference for daily usage. If high power or race, RTF should be used.

There is a difference in old and new transmissions, even if the old transmission is fresh out of the box from Honda with no use at all. They both have different fluid needs.

^ If what i have read is correct. If the transmission calls for GL-4 you can ONLY use GL-4.

The amount of additives in the GL-5 (because there is 5% more than what is in GL-4) will do damage to the brass synchros in the trans.

GL-5 is safe for use in Honda transmissions, it does not damage the synchros.

Should have added in the fact that I was reading up on all this for my AE86. Because GL-4 is a bitch to find in stock at a store.

Thats about all there is needed in this thread. Read what they tell you to put in the trans/diff and use it. If it says GL-5, use GL-5. If it says GL-4, use GL-4.

Called torco tech support today and they told me that the MTF upgrade from GL4 to GL5 was brought about compliance and compatibility for the "newer" manual transmissions on the "newer" automobiles. The torco personnel that I spoke to reassured me that it is "the same oil with beefier additives" I guess the best way to know is by Oil Analysis on both GL4 and GL5 before use to see what are the differences in their composition and post usage at about 5,000 mile to see the difference in wear. I just hope it is not like what Honda did to their MTF when they updated it, which was from GOOD to WORSE and was also brought by the same reason, for EPA compliance and compatibility to the newer model cars.

I loved the original Honda MTF when it replaced the common 10w30. It was better than 10w30/Synchromesh blend IMHO. The Torco RTF/MTF blend I have in the DD CRX right now is only thing that feels the same, It might be better but can't do back to back comparisons anymore. The old cranky tranny was just happy after the fluid change to Torco mix.

I'm a Torco dealer and have already had it analyzed, my post was based on my testing.

I also don't recommend listening to Honda's recommendation. They recommend their MTF for everything, which is not good except for the new transmissions (K, L, R series). Even for the new transmissions it is still not the best option if it has any sort of spirited use.
