Default Which final drive do I have?

It's a hybrid tranny with dohc ZC 1-4, hf 5th, and what I once thought was an SI final.

Now... upon careful inspection, it appears not to be an si FD. Reason being is the area in the diff where the axles engage is bigger than that of another si ring gear/diff assembly I have laying around. The axles that I'm using are from an 88 Accord. I tried test fitting a dx/si axle into the tranny and it just flops around inside the diff because it's too small. My ring gear has 68 teeth just like an si but the si axles are as I said, too small in diameter to engage the diff. Which FD does this mean I have?

covered on the other board

your diff is not your final drive.

Yes I know, but you would not expect someone to build a hybrid tranny and unbolt the ZC diff to put onto the si ring. Usually they just use the entire ring/diff assy. If unmodified, the diff is attached to the ring which is meshed with the pinion to make the FD. That is why I was under the impression that what I had was a stock unit. Since nobody knows of a stock Honda unit like this, what I have must be si ring bolted onto dohc ZC diff.

by keeping the ZC diff, no reshimming is needed.

Reshimming? Where and how?

I have a good DX tranny that I plan to drop the extra si FD into to make it into an SI tranny. Would doing this be as simple as bolting the si ring onto the DX diff? -or- would it involve reshimming?

changing diff assemblies requires reshimming.

DX to Si............

swap Si ring gear onto the DX diff, take all the DX gears/syncros and install on Si countershaft using DX outer bearings.....

Well, before I read your last message I sorta got started on the dx to si change over last night. What I did was take the si ring and bolted it to the dx diff. Then I took everything on the dx countershaft and transfered them to the si counter. All that's left now (or so I think) is to reinstall everything I touched back into the dx tranny case. Will I have left something out? I still don't understand where you have to "reshim" because the way I see it, the dx ring is only being swapped for the si ring so that doesn't change the way the entire assembly sits in the diff housing in the tranny.

Also, since all L3 countershafts are identical in tolerances (right?) and I transfered everything over to the si counter including the 2 top bearings and the 1 bottom bearing, nothing should change in the way the countershaft, the gears, or the diff sits and rides inside the tranny case. Tell me what if anything I'm not accounting for. And when you say reshimming, do you mean actually taking like a certain sized washer and placing it somewhere in the internals of the tranny?

your good to go.

If you would have swapped the diff itself, then reshim.

Zc, Si, DX?????? got lost as too which tranny your working with at times!!!!!!!!

Now try that with 100+ different people.

Gets confusing!

Thanks for all the help.

Yea, I just bolted the si ring to the dx diff and put it back into the dx tranny. Then I swapped everything from the dx counter to the si counter and put that into the dx tranny as well. I couldn't have put the si diff into the dx case because the si diff has bigger bearings. I think that's what you meant that involved reshimming? And if so I presume dx diff bearings are thinner or thicker than si diff bearings thus requires reshimming?
